Default How to get his birth certificate, SS card, etc

Hey everyone! Wow I have never been in this forum before, it feels pretty good!!

My hubby and I were talking at visit about when he comes home (in less than a year *fingers crossed*), and how he doesnt have any type of id or any legal documents verifying his identity.

Who knows where his original birth certificate is, it will probably never be located. Same for his social security card. His drivers license was confiscated when he was arrested, 13 years ago.

Without those, how can he get a drivers license when he comes home?? All he will have is his prison ID. Does anyone know how I can go about getting his legal docs in order, how to get new copies of everything for our records? I do have his power of attorney and will probably need to use it to get these items. Have any of you had to deal with this and how did you go about it?

Thanks!
Aimee

for a copy of his birth certificate .. you can go to the vital statictics in your area.. show proof of who you are and i think its like 10 dollars, the ss card you can call your local ss office and ask them what all you need to get his for him..

Getting a drivers license i think all you need is a proof of address .. you can call the local dmv and they will tell you if there are certain specifications on him gettin a license..

congrats once again

try to send away for his BC first

first let me say im in VA and everything is pretty easy here
i print out the app for my hubby and filled it out, he had a valid id at the time (not anymore) so i sent the copy of that with it, paid the money
and they sent it
but since you have power of att, just make copy of that paperwork with a copy of your id and money order, send it all with the filled out app and they should send the birth certicate with no problem

when he gets out one of the papers they will give him he can take to DMV with the BC you get to get his id or lisense whichever

after that he can get his social but he has to be the one to get that himself

I started doing some research and it seems like I cant get the BC without showing the drivers license, and I cant get the license without having a BC! I am going to call the office of vital stats here tomorrow and see what they say.

YOu can go to http://www.vitalcheck.com and order the birth certificate online...that's what I did to get my husbands. Depending on your state, it shouldnt be a problem.

Another thing, when he is released, he will get release papers. He can take those papers to the social security administration and they will issue his social security card. My girlfriend works for social security and says it happens all the time.

Good luck

I had to get a certified copy (considered an "original") of my man's birth certificate for our marriage, and all I had to do was call up the Vital Records place in the town he was born, give them his information (like date of birth, father's name, mother's maiden name, etc.), and send a money order for $10 and that was it. They didn't need any ID from him.
