Default Shirley's On Lockdown

FYI, I just read in the Boston Metro this morning that Shirley is on lockdown. Apparently 200 inmates refused to come in from the recreation area last night. Nothing was mentioned about why it happened- but I'm sure if 200 guys were involved, then there's something to the story and the reasoning behind it, and it's not just about the tuna casserole in the chow hall. The article was just a little blurb at the top of the page, so if y'all know any details feel free to add. i just wanted to give a heads up to all the girls with loved ones there in case you hadn't heard or were worrying.

You know, i dunno which part of Shirley (the article really was like two sentences long!) gimme a sec and I'll see what I can hunt down for you.

EDIT:

'Kay, I got a link for starters. Still not much specifics, i'll keep digging:
http://www.thebostonchannel.com/news...89/detail.html

"Wiffin said that at 12:30 p.m. the inmates refused to leave the yard due to some complaints, which she did not specify."

Yeah, they probably wouldn't specify, now would they? Bah.

Unhappy

Hi everyone,
the original incident was actually at MCI-Shirley, the medium security, but they also put SBCC, the maximum security, under lockdown as well last thursday, march 2. The boston herald had a brief article in friday's local/regional news section. Basically, inmates refused to leave the rec yard at 12:30pm and didn't return to their cells until 3:40pm. Their tier time was cut to 90 min from 3 hours; just another inhumane edict from the doc whose sole purpose is to abuse inmates as much as possible. It's a shame the papers don't print the reality of being locked in a cell for days at a time, not being able to go outdoors for fresh air and exercise and the negative effects that has on a human being; how they must so look forward to that minimal 3 hours outside and how many times it's just arbitrarily denied them, seemingly on whim. Well, I won't be surprised if all 200 now get d-tix, with charges like, "inciting a riot, hostage-taking", etc., get sent to seg, labeled "security threats" and shipped out to supermax. This system is so out of control.

I agree with you, emmjay. Although i'm not so sure that "the sole purpose of the DOC is to abuse inmates", it does often seem that way. I for one think that the whole system is incredibly inhumane and more than a little corrupt, but i also know that the DOC walks a fine line when it comes to human rights. Any institution, from max-security prisons to the adolescent therapeutic rez where I work, is obligated to maintain particular standards- any failure to do so often comes from lack of staff, training, and decent pay. Or, from a lack in the human rights standards themselves. There's definitely two sides, for sure.

On a side note, the last time it snowed the CO's at billerica wouldn't let the men go out into the courtyard for rec.... nevermind that is was cold enough to freeze your titties, hah. But my fiance, who thinks he runs the whole jail, was having a hissy about being denied access. So he marched up to the CO by the door and gave him a whole edict about his Human Rights being violated because he couldn't go out in the fresh air. I think he almost made the poor guy cry, then went outside for all of five minutes in the frigid snow before coming back in (just because he could, haha). It was the principle of the thing, I guess.

Default MCI-Shirley Medium LOCKDOWN

Does anybody knows whats going on at MCI-Shirley Medium? Isn't it unlawful and injustice to take away the little freedom they had. Someone shine some light on me and tell me what's going on.

My boyfriend has not been able to call out. Visits have been cancelled for 2 weeks now. They are all locked in 23 hours a day with only 20 mins out a day and shower every other day! They are in a MEDUIM security facility. Why has this lock down been taken place? I don't understand!!!!!

Did all 200 get sanctions or were just some singled out for punishment? Do you know the length of time the phone/tier time restrictions are in force? You can try contacting the american civil liberties union or the mass correctional legal services in boston, but I'm sure it wouldn't do any good: the DOC can do just about anything they please and get away with it; it's really beyond comprehension. And yes, I speak from personal experience; my son was doing fine at norfolk, no d-tix in 4 yrs., no trouble until he started filing grievances, all legitimate according to the law, civil rights violations, health and safety issues, you name it; the DOC responded by placing him in seg and ultimately shipping him out to supermax, where he couldn't have access to law library, etc. I consulted with top boston lawyers who agreed his grievances all had merit, but it was impossible to fight the doc and would only cause my son more harm, including the life-threatening kind. I was told to wait until he gets out of the system and couldn't be harmed to file my own lawsuits. This is the reality of the situation.

Another article turned up today in the Metro about the situation in Shirley. I couldn't find the article online, so i retyped it here. Just like we thought, there's more going on here than meets the eye:

Officers Conduct Search at Prison
"A team conducted a prison-wide search for contraband at the medium-security lockup in Shirley yesterday in response to a recent inmate protest.
The State Department of Correction said the operation was a "foloow up" to the March 2 protest, in which hundreds (er, two hundreds, to be exact) of the prison's more than 1,100 inmates refused to leave a recreation yard The protest led to a lock-down at the prison that remained in effect yesterday.
About 100 members of the state prisons tactical team joined 80 corrections recruits in the search."

Is this "response" really standard procedure? It seems to me like something else is brewing. Anybody got any leads?

In other news, while i was googling "shirley prison lockdown" one of the first results to turn up was this thread. Yeah, spreadin' the info. : )

The boston herald has a few articles; here's the link:

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRe...ticleid=130901

Am I psychic or what when I predicted they'd ship out the "instigators" to supermax; just glad only 15 got sent out and not all 200. Oh wait, they couldn't send them all out -where would they put everyone? Of course, the doc needs to justify its inhumane treatment - and yes, I consider cutting precious out of cell time in half to be inhumane - by turning this "situation" around, sensationalizing it as a "rebellion by unruly dangerous criminals" and further reinforcing the "dangerousness" by implementing a shakedown for weapons; it's so pathetic; who writes their scripts anyway? It's all a ploy to get the attention focused away from the real problems which exist and we are all painfully aware of but the general public is not; the doc will do everything in their power to maintain the status quo. It's getting old. But, I futher predict the doc will continue to milk this quiet, orderly protest into a dangerous, potentially life-threatening full out riot which they so successfully avoided by their swift actions; they will most likely be follow up articles in the herald on this.

Emmjay, did you read my post up in the articles thread about going undercover? I need a story / editorial for an article i'm writing for the metro. I think this shirley lockdown is a good starting point. My roomie knows some of the editors there and they're interested in reading what we've got to say. What have you got for facts/ evidence about your experiences so far? And what do you know about Shirley & the DOC? it sounds like you've got some interesting info. I mean, if you don't mind sharing. Drop me a Pm!

This is craziness huh? What the hell? 3 weeks of lock down? If that was Jay's prison i'd go insaine! Thank god billerica is low on the food chain of prisons. But watch out cuz when they go to that new building they have plans to change the amount of time inmates are out of their cells and how often and how long visits are, there's rumors that they will no longe have PC just keep them in general population and move them from area to area when people figure out who they are. I can already see the riots happening lol GOD LORD holdem back... holdem back!
