I was reading about the women in pennsylvania on Death Row. Their plight is quite a bit different from what most of the men experience. They are in a really bad situation--in with other inmates who spend a lot of time screaming and yelling. They're in a really loud area. I don't believe they get tv. I also read that there's a petition to get them moved to a better situation and get the same privileges that the men on dr get.

The women in CA are housed in similar conditions - Ad Seg. The screaming, cursing, and yelling never stops. They do have access to tv though.

They are allowed outside their row of cells, but are caged into the distance of the upper tier. A perforated metal fence blocks them all in.

They do have a treadmill (a bit hypocritical) and a flat-screen tv. Construction has begun on a "soft yard" for them with grass, instead of the concrete high-walled "rec yard" with no view.

The women in Pennsylvania were moved to a more restrictive unit during the past year--there's a thread on the topic somewhere around here. If I recall correctly, they were placed in the same unit as prisoners who are chronic "discipline problems", despite the fact that none of them has caused any trouble.

I believe the thread I referred to has a link to the petition. The thread is in the capital punishment area, but unfortunately I cannot recall the title.

Why such a difference in the way the men on DR are treated.
It seems more like the old mental institutions instead of DR at a prison.

I guess it is the old theory 'out of sight out of mind'. These guys are locked up year on year and very few people actually give a shit what is going on for them or want to really do something about it. It is the same I guess as patients in previous mental institutions they to were often sent away and forgotten about.

I know C fills his day as best he can. He gets up and has breakfast. He works out with the guy in the cell above and plays chess with the guy in the cell next to him. He does his own laundry, writes to his family and I and also studies in the law library to look at how he can appeal his case. He waits for the mail man to see if I have written. He gets to go on the yard three or four times each week as long as something doesn't kick-off to cause the prison to be locked down. He reads loads and watches some television. He loves music but often just puts his headphones on to drown out the constant noise in there.

Despite the things that he may or may not have done I think he is a total sweetheart.

AZ, a daily routine with only a few yard time in concrete yard, about three times a week, in summer extreme hot in winter extreme cold. shower: he has to strip in his cell, gets handcuffed, has to walk naked to the shower, short shower, then the same back. sometimes he has to wait in the cold of the shower as the guard has to do better......
books: they are limited to 5 in the cell. so he has to give others away, if he gets a new one... good to ask before! (direct from vendors of course)
tv and radio exist. but day light is precious on some places, the lower trier has no day light coming in the area, those above get some, most of all those they are near the windows.
visits: no contact visits at all... restricted time. and most of all: for visitors there is a restriction !!! you can only visit one inmate in the system in AZ except you are family and request this special. (my reason to not being on a visiting list of either of my pen pals) phone calls only to those they are on the visiting list. (for the parcel I am not sure, as there is no money to send such)
some of them talk to others and even invent fantasy games they play together...., others work most of all on their cases or stay with pretty little contact.
they get 10$ a month for their needs: like buying salt, soap, and all else... writing to oversea is for example not possible if there is no support from the outside!
Georgia: all guys of DR can walk free for about 5 hours a day in the inside of the DR unit. they have a kind of inside yard where they meet, play games and can socialise. they also have contact visits. (one side this is good, the other side it is hard when somebody gets executed who has been close to an other.... after 26 years of DR my pen pal did loose that way some of his mates.... )
FL: there are also contact visits possible.... no pictures with naked shoulders from anybody allowed....
there are a lot of differences depending where guys are..... this goes as well for sending anything.... and rules change (like for sending money ...)

Default DR in CA women

my pp, M, she stated that the row is getting grass and rose bushes planted in their 'yard' this March/April 2008. M stated she has not seen grass or rose bushes for 10 years now, and all the women on the row were really excited once they knew the grass and rose bushes were being put in. ~ keeley
