Protective custody?

My friend has requested to be put in protective custody at the Rockingham County Jail. I know this through a friend that works there, not my friend himself. I guess he was being harrassed?
What does this mean? Is it like solitary confinement or something?

Hi Numbhangle, Sorry To Hear About Your Friend. Pc Is For His Safety, Maybe Someone Is Harrasing Him, Maybe He Was Detoxing, Or He May Be There For A Charge That Other Inmates Dont Like? I'm Not Sure What His Conviction Is But If It Has Anything To Do With A Sex Crime (not Saying It Is, Nor Is It Any Of My Buisness) He Is In The Safest Block. D-block Is Where They Pc People, There Is Little Interaction With Others. The Only Bad Aspect Of D-block Is Your Locked In Your Cell 23hrs A Day. You Eat All 3 Meals In Your Cell, You Get Half Hr Tier Time In The Am And Pm. I Spent 27days There For Behavior And It Definetly Gets Boring. I Hope He Likes To Read And Likes His Cellmate. If He Is Really Having Problems With Evryone He Can Request His Own Cell.

Unfortunately it is for a sex crime
So can he be there until his time is up? (18 months) or is it just a band-aid for right now? He will have a cell mate? I am picturing a 1 room cell with a little window that people can look in (I'm admitedly overly dramatic).
Will he eat his meals alone?
