Default Patrick Knight - TX - 26 June 2007 - Executed

He doesn't want penpals, money or even mercy. The US death row inmate Patrick Knight just wants the public to send him jokes, and says he will pick the funniest one for his last statement as he is put to death on June 26.

Knight, 39, has already served 16 years in a Texas jail and wants to go out with a wisecrack.

Knight said he got the idea after a friend, Vincent Gutierrez, was executed earlier this year and said from the death chamber: "Where's a stunt double when you need one?" He's hoping to top that.

Patti, I agree. I think it is wonderful that after spending so long on DR that he would still be able to crack a joke.

Sounds to me that he is trying to laugh to keep from crying. It's very sad that our society thinks the death penalty is the answer. I pray for all those on DR and hope that their fight will someday end this terrible misjustice that solves nothing.

Unhappy

I've been writing to Bryan (Patrick) for a few months now after someone that I write to in Polunsky asked me to look out for him and try to give him some smiles during his last few months.
Bryan has had me constantly laughing as he has recalled memories of childhood, his time in the army and even the 16 years he has spent on the row.
I have no idea how long my mail takes to get to him, but I have been sending him a letter or a card every day for the last week or so, hoping with each one I write that it will not be my last, that he will in fact get a last minute stay, even though I know in reality that this is unlikely, as does he.
I am going to miss this big guy so much, having him in my life, all be it so very briefly, has given me so much joy.

I think I can appreciate and admire his sense of humor. At the same time I cannot stop thinking how awful I'd feel if I sent him a wisecrack and he actually used it.

Atleast he's taking it with a sense of humor though.. he's not sitting there depressed counting down his time..
But.. still.. it is sad

I can think of a couple of real zingers, too. I just cannot bear to send them to him. Spending the time instead sending requests for clemency.

Default watching this has made him even more real!

I was just sent this link by a friend to a cnn interview that Bryan has done with regard to his request for a joke to say as his last statement......this had made him seem even more real now, and I'm now going to be able to hear his voice when I re-read the letters I've recieved from him over the last few months.

He's right, he does have a mischievious grin!

I'm going to miss him. My thoughts and love go out to Angel and Krista x

I copied the link and it got me there.
I think you can't go directly because it is the CNN player.

Good interview, though.

I called in for Bryan's (Patrick) special radio show about an hour ago, I think it was the single hardest thing that I've ever had to do....keep it together while I was on air........and of course there were so many things I forgot to say....my thoughts are with Kirsta and Angel for tomorrow.
