What goes on in a Prelim hearing??

Can someone tell me what goes on in the Preliminary Hearing? I know witnesses are called..are they cross examined? I "heard" that some of the P.A.'s witnesses are going to plead the 5th Ammen. Also heard that both sides have supoened the same witnesses?? This is so confusing!

Pretty much this is when the judge hears arguments as to whether or not there is enough evidence to move forward to a trial.
Sometimes it happens that both sides want the judge to hear what that witness has to say.
