DOC really needs to start taking things like this into consideration when they are trying to figure out why there is so much violence in prisons. Granted Im sure they would say that it would make the risk factor of spreading deseases higher but isnt that what they test then for in RDC? I think inmates should be allowed to masturbate cus honestly if there hands and mind are busy focused on that what is the likely hood that they are going to turn around and punch somebody in the face or something stupid like that. Masturbation is a natural way to make yourself happy.

I don't believe there are any medical issues from not masturbating. No physical ones anyway such as a huge amount of sperm etc.
I would think, and I'm pretty sure there's nothing published on this (pros and cons of masturbation in prison), that masturbation is a basic need and urge for all human beings and if able I believe all humans whether incarcerated or not have every right to indulge!

I noted in your post that this man was alone in his cell that would be really important. If someone was masturbating and his cellmate was present and offended that would be a problem and if he persisted that should be banned, however I think most people have common sense!

I'm glad you posted this, Ive thought about it and would hate to be in a position where all pleasure, even self pleasure is removed from your life, I do believe that's cruel and unusual.

Sounds like the guard is just being 'a mean female' , its not like she's Clarice Starling and is having handfuls thrown at her. Maybe a little masturbation may release some of that tension

If someone does it in their cell, and it is not directly affecting anyone else, then i just dont see the reason to make a fuss. obviously we dont know the whole story or anything, and being locked up DOES amount to no privacy what so ever. but still.

A friend of mine, her husband is in a MI prison, and this is an issue for them.

I think if given the drugs that sex offenders and psych wards are given which medically castrates them by turning off / inhibiting hormons that create sex drive, that would probably actually solve problems on both sides. Granted, nobody would like the ideo of having their sex drive "turned off" but at least, it would allow them better control and lower their temper.

Masturbation is natural and if the female guards can't handle it by male prisoners, then they should be restricted to female only units and vice versa. Personally I don't see the harm in it.

Take female guards out of male prisons and male guards out of women prisons that would eliminate some problems

In the end the charges were dropped.... what struck me as funny is she watched in detail on the monitor, she was able to give a very detailed account of his "sexy time" that he probably thought was private!!!..... turn your head twit! Really?!? some CO's just look for stuff to complain about!!

Better hope they never try to do that to the general public..... I'm in trouble!!!!

I realize this post, thread, whatever is about men masturbating. I have another perspective, it happens to women, too. Three write-ups for masturbation makes it a major case, three of those makes you a registered sex offender. Now, I willingly admit I know nothing about male masturbation, but on my unit, where I spent over 4 years, it happens. It's a natural human action, not meant to insult or offend anyone, usually done when you "think" you have privacy(in prison standards). To be punished for an act that is naturally occurring in human beings is hippocritical to me. Just because you are in prison, SO or not, does not mean you are no longer human. But so many rules there are designed to make you believe that the line gets blurred between what you are and what is deviant or wrong - you question all you believe about simply being human.

I don't believe anyone here, including me, is speaking that it should not be allowed. However, ra&jo hit the mark . . . discretion.

My hubby tells me there's a "signal" the discrete guys put out, everyone knows, and gives them their privacy, even the COs. (If the CO walks the run a second time in 15-30 minutes and find the "signal" still up, s/he MAY investigate to make sure no other activities are taking place, but even the COs honor the request for privacy to a point.

But, MOST of the guys push themselves to display it . . . and get a better high when they can find a female CO to do it in front of. That, to me, is a BIG problem and should be subject to discipline. He told me a story about one of the female COs who was about 60, very respectful to the inmates, very easy to get along with, actually seemed interested in who they were (outside of being an inmate) occasionally, and one of the guys deliberately pushed it into her face. She was shaken, dealt out the prescribed "punishment", still without losing her cool. Afterwards, several of the guys, including my husband, APOLOGIZED to her for what the "idiot" did. It's guys like that who make it tough for the others.

I have a friend in Japan that told me they are allow a time and day when this activity was allowed. Now the Japanese people are a little more understanding of human nature in this matter.

No one is hurt by this activity, regarding religious codes (well that's between the inmate and his God).

I know cellmates would acknowledge private time for using the bathroom in the cell, and would walk out of the cell (when allowed to give his roommate some privacy), if the roommate wanted to relieve himself it was up to him to decide what to relieve.

This is such a silly thing. both have natural needs, but as always some folks who are CO's or lawmakers want to have complete control. I mean, who cares?

We had in a pod (group of 16 men in one large area) one gent who would do it in the open, he had a few mental problems, and one of the brothers would gently tell him to go into a cell and complete the act. No one was offended, well perhaps a few giggles because he knew no better, and frankly we all knew here or there we did it ourselves.

As long as hes not whipping it out in front of the CO saying look at this and waving it in her face then I don't see a problem with it. Masturbation should definitely be allowed as long as they are making an effort to be discrete.

I agree that as long as it's done discreetly and not with the purpose of harassing anyone, it should be allowed. And I also agree that if female COs can't take it from male inmates, they should not work in a male prison. And if as a CO you're gonna sit there and watch someone masturbate when they think they are doing it privately (in prison standards), then you should be charged with voyeurism. Your job is not to watch some dude jerk off, it's to ensure the security of the facilty and the safety of its inmates. How about spending your time doing that instead of spying on some poor guy who's just trying to release some tension?

Yes, there are medical reasons that this is good for any person to do. Releases stress amoung other things. Not being ugly, but read some articles and studies on the benefits of it.

It should be allowed as long as they are not doing it openly in front of anyone, from what my guy tells me as long as they are discreet its not a problem. To do this is just human nature and as a lot of things have already been taken away from them if they were to punish eveyone in prison not only would the SHU be full to bursting then it may very well cause more tension meaning more fights. There is a saying men think about sex every seven seconds but i bet for the men inside that might be every two seconds. Without going into detail my guy can close his eyes and forget for a period of tme where he is
