You will need to do them for him and if he is due a refund, you will need a power of attorney to get it deposited. They don't deposit it into his account. You can get the check, but I don't know how long they are good for. Also, you will need the POA to sign his return. THat is all I know of it as the last time hubby filed, he was out to file and went in before his refund came.

The IRS has their own POA. I got the form and sent it to my fiance BLANK for him to sign and then filled in his personal information along with everything else. Once the IRS receives the POA they will assign you a CAF number (I can't remember what that stands for). You can then file the return for your son and handle any IRS business for him going forward. A normal POA doesn't mean anything to the IRS. I found that out after sending in a copy of my Durable POA. When you sign the return just sign it like this: Jane Doe for John Doe and write the CAF number underneath your signature. That is how I did it and I had no problems.

No problem. And now that I think about it, I didn't send the form to him blank. I think I just sent it to him without his SSN. Ya know we don't anyone getting there hands on that info. You will have to have the CAF # handy everytime you call the IRS, though. They wouldn't give you any info until you give them your number. Better start now, though. It is the government, so it takes a little while to get everything going. Good luck!

My ex-husband. We arent together anymore. Worked about 3 months last year before he went in. I'm going to help him file but I'm not sure how to do it. He was serving a sentence in Texas, but they transported him to NM to serve some time there. Will he need to file in NM or in Texas??? Also can I do it for him??

Someone Please HELP MEE

I think that you file in the state that you worked, so it would be Texas. You can do it for him, but you will need him to sign the forms.

An inmate in MO can go to the library and get the proper forms to file his taxes. When I did it I put my fathers address on it for return and sent my dad a power of attorney form [also available in library] which I had notarized at the facility [free].
