Default Sex abuse, violence alleged at teen jails across U.S.

Girls as young as 13 say they were shackled for weeks at a time in Mississippi.

A Texas teen was allegedly offered birthday cake in exchange for sex.

A guard drove his knee into the neck of a frail suicidal Ohio boy after the youth was wrestled to the ground and held down by other guards who stripped him and covered his face with a smock, a state report said.

"It's a nationwide crisis that has been going on for years, one the public has never been told the extent of," said psychiatric social worker Jerome Miller, the co-founder of the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives, who has evaluated and helped reform juvenile jails for more than three decades.

What country is this anyway. The fact that this is happening under the noses of those who have the power to change it, yet they ignore it is a true crime against humanity.

I don't think it's America any longer.

I read a story about a 16 yr old boy who was sentenced to 10 yrs for setting a dumpster on fire his first offense didn't have a criminal record any who he got sent to adult prison were he was bein beating & raped by not just one man but several at a time. This was everyday he asked & asked to be in protected custody filed paper work pleading to the warden for help & he was always denied becuz he had no evidence this was happening mind u he was being beatin & there was filed paperwork of there being anal tearing between certain times of day everyday a couple months later the boy killed himself. It broke my heart becuz that just shows how messed up the system is & nothing was ever done to help him. My heart goes out to his mom & any other moms who have children in prison/ juvie. My husband is serving a 30 yr sentence & I seen how much this has hurt his mom he is 21. He says all the time he never wants to see our son behind those walls.

While the media will obviously only report on the worst incidents, I think one of the biggest problems is that the general public is simply uneducated about what life in prison is like. The media has a tendency to make people believe that all prisoners are absolute scum. While prisoners obviously are in prison for a reason, they're still people and if they are having issues such as that in prison those responsible should be punished and those who are affected should get the attention and help that they as human beings deserve.

I don't know what people think of this, but I believe that the primary goal of prison should be to rehabilitate.

I don't think it's so much that they think it's OK, it's more that those who have the power to change the system simply don't bother, and those within the prisons have become corrupt.
