Yep, they had a professional photographer come in back in the fall, and we got the pictures in I think December. They're very 'school picture' looking, but we love them! This is the first time they've done this at CTF since we've been there (3 years+), but hopefully it'll be an annual event. It's great to have a picture of him that wasn't taken the visiting room, and where he's not in same blues!

My dad sent me a couple that were taken in the fall as well. They turned out nicely!

JMK, are there cameras allowed in the visiting room, or does someone usually take their pic there in lieu of a portrait?

You can't bring your own camera, but you can have polaroids taken in the visiting room of you and your loved one. You will buy "photo ducats" (it's been awhile, but I think they're $3 each), and then can use those to have polaroids taken during your visit. The quality isn't great since they're polaroids, but it can be a fun memento of your trip . I KNOW you'll want to have a few taken when you finally get to go see your dad!

That is SO cool! Where do you get the photo ducats? I'll definitely want to get some of those. I have yet to see a picture of us together, even from when I was a baby. Apparently he was usually the one behind the camera. And since I haven't really seen him since I was about 5, we've missed a lot of photo opportunities.

I read an article yesterday saying that polaroid's going to phase out their instant photo film. Wahh! I wonder what they'll do at CTF when that's not an option anymore!

Yes, we've all been wondering what will happen when all the existing polaroid film is gone....Apparantly a couple of prisons have already switched to using a digital camera and photoprinter, so that's the most likely option. I'm sure some prisons will find themselves underprepared and it may take some time for them catch up, but hopefully in the end we'll end up with better quality pictures with the switch.

I got goosebumps thinking about you and your dad being able to take a picture together after so long! I can't remember which yard he is on, but if he's on North you buy the photo ducats from the sargent where you go through the metal detector. I haven't visited the other yards so can't tell you where it's done there. At North they'll periodically make an announcement in the visiting room that it's time for pictures, and anyone with a ducat (which is just a piece of paper, but in prison they call everything a ducat) will line up and wait for their turn. You can take as many as you want, so you can have some to take home and to leave with you dad.

A digital camera and photoprinter would definitely be a good fix. And really, I'd think it'd be cheaper than polaroid film when all is said and done. And like you said, the quality will be so much better!

Isn't it crazy? We had one visit when I was 11, but I was forced to see him and I was pretty uncommunicative and afraid of him. So I don't really count that hour as an actual visit. He's in central, so I'll have to figure out where you buy the ducats and get a handful. I know my dad will want to have pictures of us to keep too! As it is, he's amazed that I can scan photos he's sending me of my early childhood and send him copies I've printed. LOL

When you enter the visiting room at central, there is an officer that checks you in where you get your lunch number she sells the ducats for $2 each and you can get up to five, he can also take some back to his cell with him.

Excellent! Thank you! Now can you explain what a lunch number is?

We're very lucky when it comes to visiting room food at both CTF and SVSP, because we have a food vendor who sets up a table in the visiting room and sells freshly prepared foods. Most prisons just get vending machines. We get all kinds of options each week--salads, hamburgers, pork chops, tacos, fried chicken, and on and on. Plus containers of fresh fruit and deserts (slices of cake, cookies, etc.).

To control the crowds, they will give you a food number when you check in (a piece of paper with a number on it), and then call folks in groups of numbers to line up and purchase their food. This cuts down on the number of people all bunched up trying to get their food. They usually call 10-15 numbers at once. Then you get to stuff your loved one full of food until they can't move. That's the best part

How cool is that?! I envisioned something like the student store at my old high school, which was a literal crush of people until food ran out. This system sounds much more organized! I like it.

Question Photographers coming again?

Before the lockdown, my husband was telling me that picture time was coming around again. Does anyone know if the lockdown affects their ability to have "school" pictures taken?

Update on the food vendor for North facility, probably all of them.
Last weekend I was fortunate enough to visit my honey and we speak to the food vendor all the time. He informed me that they can no longer bring in "special ordered" foods, per the system/warden. I was about to order a birthday cake cause I saw someone else with one on the last visit, no candles, just the cake...but thought gee I could get him some sushi. Anyway thought gone, if anyone else has any information on speciality foods getting in for visits, please post. But we both talked to the food vendor guy at north last weekend and he told us the news. Sad. It was good while it lasted.

Oh well, at least we have a food vendor.

Yeah, they gotta have the money before "Picture Day" or they won't be able to take any...unless they're in the picture with another inmate.
