I always play it safe by sending cards that don't have any metallic writing or glitter, or the annoying little musicplayers in them, or fancy cards that have inner lining glued inside. Just a plain, flat card. He always gets them. Unlike cards he's drawn for me that were intercepted on their way out! ggrrrr...but that's a whole different thread!
Besides, it's not the gift-wrapping but the content that makes it special.

No they won't refuse all your mail. Only things that you mail that are not allowed will be returned. If the reason the card were returned was because they were wrapped in plastic and since you took the plastic off they should be fine. Don't worry, I get stuff returned every now and then. Just because 1 item was returned dosen't mean that every letter/card will be returned.

Default mail question on pens

Hi everyone. I sent my son a writing package, but didn't realize you couldn't use bubble wrap. So needless to say it was sent back. My question is this. How many pens can I send. In this package I sent the clear bic package of ten unopened. Will that be sent back or exceptable? I am mailing it back tomorrow, so kind of wanted to know before I mailed it. Thank you in advance.

If you check the DVI info sticky it will tell you what you can mail in, in a writing package. Yes that is the only thing that can be mailed in. Care packages have to come from an approved vendor. They stopped letting us from the outside send in care packages we made up ourselves about 7-8 years ago. Also they can only get packages once they are mainline. Reception inmates cannot recieve these. Only the writing package.

Just passing through, yes you can send in a bible it just has to come from a vendor, like barnes and noble, amazon.com, etc. So you'd be safe to have one sent from amazon.

Question Writing package

Hello,

I have heard various answers regarding just how many pieces of paper, envelopes, stamps and pens you can send to an inmate at DVI. Does anyone know the allowed amount so that way my package won't be returned if I put too much writing material in it. Also does anyone elses man ask them for a lot of stamps. Like more than you know they could possibly use?

your allowed to send 500 sheets of paper, 1 pen 3 pencils 40 envelopes and i think 40 stamps. and the reason why the guys ask for more stamps they need is propbably to sell them to get their cosmetics or food. they sell them out!

Take it to the post office and weigh it at the kiosk or have it weighed at the counter, that way you will know what the postage will be

No its 500 loose leaf paper, when my husband got to dvi i called the mail room and they told me 500 loose paper, 40 stamps and 40 envelopes, 1 pen, 3 penciels, and 15 pics. i havent had any issues since, ive sent him the same amount each time. you might want to call dvi to double check cause the sticky on here is from 2006 and they have updated it since then at dvi but not here.

Well the reason i posted that question is because im sure someone has had to have sent 3 pecils before so i was looking for a quick answer. I do realize one definate way is goin to the post office, umm not to be sarcastic, but i feel your answer was.

It was not my intention to be sarcastic at all, just trying to help. I never just sent pencils, and I always mailed my stationery packages in a flat rate priority mail envelope. I think the answer to your question would depend on where you are mailing your pencils from and how you are mailing your pencils. Also I have no idea of what sort of pencils you are sending and not sure if every pencil weighs the same as every other pencil out there.

And once you are at the post office finding out how much the postage is going to be you can just go ahead and mail those pencils so they can be on their way

When my son was at DVI he could only get colored pencils in a quarterly package so I guess they have changed the rules again. I'm sorry if I offended you but like I said before I was trying to be helpful.

Good luck to you.

Not the answer you want to hear, but no...my guy hasn't mentioned anything about the mail being slow, let alone not coming in at all...
Could it be that the mailroom is just THAT backed up? Would mail get that behind if the mail room people were being forced to work less? Say, they only get to reading everyone's letters a few times a week instead of daily??? Pure speculation, but either way it sucks!
