No, they never really know until they are going or until they get there. He has requested either Solano or Folsom, but they will send him where they have a bed for him... That's part of what makes this part so hard. You don't even know which prison to research so you can be ready to go when they get there. Patience...Patience...

his counselor should have some idea of where he's goin.. he might be able to help you. you can call records, if you haven't already, and ask to speak to him.

call DVI (209-835-4141) press 1 when u hear the automated voice then click 2 for records. once they answer let them know u are tryna figure out where ur husband will be transfered and wish to speak to his counselor. theyll ask for his CDC number to look up his information. theyll tell u tha counselor's name. they might give u his/her extension or transfer u.

Default What is the length of time it takes for mail to get to your inmate?

How long is it taking to get mail to guys in reception? Mine is on a parole hold waiting to be released into a program. I sent paper stamps and envelopes along with a letter almost 2 weeks ago. I just got a "why aren't you writing me" letter. Most prisons take 4-5 days for the inmate to get mail is DVI SLOW?

It takes 2-3 weeks to begin with and then after he's been there about 3 weeks, he'll start getting mail pretty regularly (like within 4-5 days). Hope that helps!! I know, I was extremely frustrated at the beginning as well because my man also wasn't getting any of my mail for 2-3 weeks and now it's a lot quicker. I think they're just that backed up in the mail room.

He SHOULD NOT BE AT DVI MORE THAN 30 DAYS SO HIS MAIL WILL BE RETURNED...IT SEEMS LIKE THEY SHOULD HAVE A PAROLE VIOLATION FACILITY SEPARATE FROM RECEPTION

My son didn't get any of his stationary packages in less than 4 weeks. That includes the stamps that were ordered and sent from the USPS online. Send post cards. they usually get to them within a week.

Default Subscriptions go to which address?

I'm getting some subscriptions for my guy at Tracy. Should they go to the Post Office address or the Kasson Rd address?

Thanks.

Everything should be sent to the Post Office Box, the Kasson Rd address is only for UPS or FedEx (the quarterly pkg are usually sent UPS).

Default Newspaper / magazines?

Hello- My Hubby is in reception. I dont know for how long obviously... He's been there for over 2 months already. He is starved for NEWS of what's going on in the world. Can anyone tell me, do you know if I can send Newspapers? Or magizines? Is there a local paper there I can subscribe to for him?.. If I do get the newspaper, would it take 3 weeks to get to him like the mail?? (just curious) - THANKS!

Yes, P.O. Box 600 - same as your mail. Just make sure you list his name, CDC# and his location when you subscribe! Otherwise, the mailroom will take longer to delivery (since they will have to look up his info).

Question Mail Question

I was curious, my man used to be there, and I sent a lot of letters and some pics before he got transferred. Do the letters get forwarded to where he is? Because they haven't came back to me!

They are supposed to be forwarded to them but they don't use the post office to forward the mail, they put it on the same bus that takes them to the different prisons. When something does get sent back it takes a long time, I had letters returned months (literally) after my son was released.

You should be able to have newspapers sent to him but I would call the mailroom to be sure. I know when I sent single copies of magazines or newspapers he got a couple but was told that they were no longer letting them come through. And I know some were sent back.

Default Getting religious books...

My guy is currently at DVI but hoping to transfer soon. Assuming the general procedure would be the same regardless of where he is sent (at least we would have a direction to go in)....

Question is this: My guy would like to get a set of scriptures and church related materials NOT available thru Amazon or Barnes and Noble. I know he can get them but I'm not sure of the procedure to do so. Does he need to make a request with someone inside in advance, or do I send them and hope someone realizes they are religious and gets them OKed?

Thanks for the info!

I don't know what sort of scriptures and church related materials you mean but it depends entirely on where he ends up being mainlined. Books don't have to be ordered from Amazon or Barnes and Noble but from any bookseller. I've ordered from Walmart and other places that sell books. If you have a local book store that's willing to ship the books you can buy from them. If the items you want to send are not books he may be able to have them through a special purchase order. Once he is mainlined you will need to contact either the mailroom or R & R to find out how to send these for him.

You've ordered from other places?! How wonderful!

Meaning mostly his Book of Mormon and study manuals for Old and New Testament, though if we can order from other sellers then it shouldn't be a problem. I thought we were limited to Amazon and B&N.

What is R & R?

My guy just got endorsed to Avenal. Have not heard good things about that place.

I believe that you have to have them sent by a store that sells books by mail (or online). I'm not sure, but that is my understanding. I have heard of books and magazines being purchased in a Barnes and Noble store and being sent, but the store also sells my mail. R&R is receiving. That's the unit that receives and distributes the mail and packages. I think that LDS has "mail order" outreach. You might check on that.

Thank you! I will check out the mail order outreach possibility today. I do know we have an online bookstore but thought it was off limits. LOL. My "to do" list is growing by the day...but this is a good one to add.

you could call the prison chaplin and explain things to him and he will find out and let you know.
