SHU visits R hard B...especially when you gotta do years...

There's no way to get around it....

Mines was in Tehachapi SHU for 6...so I know what you feelin'...
Just visit as much as you can...he'll need to see your face and feel your luv..you know...plus for some reason from my experience I notice that the more I went to visit even for that 1hr behind glass the more he felt like he wasn't out of sight out of mind...you know all they have time to do in the SHU is think!!! No movement, no phones, no yard, no dayroom....so sometimes they let they emotions and anger get the best of them and the situation...

Hopefully he'll get out much sooner...but just write and send money...

Best of Luck

Take Care

My Husband is in the SHU at Corcoran. He's been there for a year and a half. The visits are tough, only one hour and it's behind glass so it sucks...you can send a money order. You can get them at Wal-Mart and they only charge you $0.25. Enclose it with a letter to him and make sure he knows it was in that envelope.

My Husband was supposed to be out in 12 months and it's been about 18 months...so chances are he won't get out early. But, each situation is unique so he may get lucky!!

Sometimes they can get out early; depends on circumstances and appeals. A list of all the offenses, rules violations and sentences are in the Title 15 rules book.

Yes they can receive checks but only spend $45 / month at the store. I was told that it takes up to a month for checks to post, or money orders, so J-pay is faster. They can get one special purchase package per year -- I'm suggesting a TV or radio w/ all the cables and stuff to keep him occupied.

They are, by law, supposed to get one hour of yard per day, so if he's not, he really should appeal it! They're also supposed to be able to get out for a certain time per week for law library.

Good luck and blessings to you and your man.

My husband has been in the SHU at Corcoran twice first time was for a year and this time a little over a year now he's in SHU-Ad-seg overflow what ever that is. yes the visits are hard and behind glass for a hour if you come so many miles away you get two hour visits I do because I live in Oregon. I send him a 45 j-pay monthly. I try to write him everyday and I bought him a tv with the cables which really helps him with the time.

Mine's in SHU. I just found out he is finally being released, everything will be done within 60 days. But he is being a jerk right now so I am mad at him.

BUT- I tried jpay for the first time, it is saying that my payment is still pending, so I am not sure when he will get it. But I usually always sent money orders through the post office, and he always got them. Just takes a little while. No phones though, so I haven't had that experiance yet. As for visits- if you are more than 250 miles away, you are supposed to be able to have a two hour visit, not one. It is on their website.

And quartly packages cannot exceed a certain dollar amount I think, but it can't weigh more than 35 pounds. All guys in SHU are in privalge group D I beleive.

Yes, that is true. Some may take longer to post to his books than others.

From what I have been reading, it is safer and quicker for some reason to send the ones right from USPS. I haven't had any problems, they get them posted in about two weeks or so from the date I send them. Maybe just play it safe? It's only a dollar from the post office, but I guess it depends how far you have to go to get to the post office as opposed to the 7-11 on the corner.

Really sorry to hear your man is in SHU.

wow... my friend is in the SHU and has been there for nine years. He is doing LIFE under the CA three strike law.

I have sent money orders from both the USPO and banks, grocery stores... never had a problem, I hope that helps.

We have had mail issues as in him not getting some of my mail and visa verse... now we number our letter and envelopes and for some reason it has helped. Also, I send really important stuff priority mail and request a signature and that also helps. Big time. The flat rate priority service isn't too bad, especially if you send a lot of pages- we are working on a writ and I often print articles and other things and put together a package of sorts. It's under $5.00 and worth it, imo.

Hi, can you tell me where to find the information on visits being able to be extended for 2 hours if you live far enough away? I live 275 miles from the prison and was never aware of this but would like to utilize it if possible. Also, can anyone tell me how much money they can have each month on their account while in the SHU?

Thanks for your help.......

Weaver, our friend just won a lawsuit that states that inmates cannot serve indefinate SHU terms and they can not be held for very long terms such as nine years. Their sentence has to fit with the Title-15. E-mail me or Skarski off list for details and the precedent.

ADS4me, the amount they can spend at the store is $45 per month. I don't know where it's stated, but I have heard this as well, about the 2 hour visits. This is if you're not able to visit often. Perhaps it's in the Title 15 or the book of rules for the SHU??? Please call the visiting sargeant to inquire.

A.C. thanks for the info on the amount of $ they can spend each month. I'm wondering about this because for the past year I've been sending my husband $100 -$150 MONthly!! I'm just wondering where this money is going if he can only spend 45.00 a month! I want to make sure I have my information right before I bust him on this. Is it written anywhere?
Thanks again!

Before you get too upset with him, please realize that he might have to give 1/2 to restitution, court costs, etc. Also the rest goes onto his books, if he needs a fee for notary or whatever, they will take it off his books, even though he can only spend $45 at the store.

My suggestion to you is send him lots of mail, post cards, greeting cards, letters, pictures, funny stuff you get off the internet; it will help keep you connected and also help the time pass for both of you. Worst thing about the hole is it's boooooring! So if he has lots to read, word puzzles to do, drawings, etc. he will keep more centered.

Default SHU visits (what is procedure?)

Hi, can anyone tell me about visits with guys in the SHU? I just made an appointment to visit a friend and don't know what to expect. Since I am out of state I was told we can have a two hour visit behind glass. Is that the best they get?? Seems extreme to me Anyway I scheduled the visit... any advice would be most welcome

I believe that generally they are only one hour (you are probably getting a longer visit due to being from out of state), but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

It's a room full of windows and benches to sit on in front of each window. I haven't been in the SHU visiting rooms since 1995 (back then the visits were 20 minutes and I drove 325 miles one way), but that's how I remember it.

HI Weaver! Yeah, I believe you are correct, I believe they are two hours. A friend of mine was in the SHU and she got 2 hour visits with her man........even one time she got about a 3+ hour visit. I think they just forgot about her or something cause she was the only one visiting behind glass. So hopefully you will get that lucky, at least from time to time.
