Default Questions about Work Release/Trasition Centers?

Hi, All.....
The Work Release/Transition Centers? Are they the same thing? Exactly how do they work? Specifically in Illinois? Anyone? I've looked through the topics & found little info....although I could have just missed it. My Bf's counselor just came up to him out of nowhere the other day & had him fill out an app. for a work release center....which most are really close to home. Right now he's 6 hours away. Anyway....from what I understand....its just a different place he would be & be able to come & go to work, right? They'd place him on a job? And he also mentioned possibly getting weekend passes to come home....is that likely? I got pretty excited about it & so did he....just wasn't sure exactly how it worked....

yes, everything you heard about work release is true. Does he also qualify for Electronic Home Detention?

I'm really not sure......I was surprised he was even qualified for the work release. At first he didn't think so because years & years ago he had a domestic battery or something. But his counselor specifically tracked him down & had him apply anyway....said he had a good shot. So we'll see. I was trying to look some up for him to let him know where some of them were. I wasn't sure if they were the level 7 "work camps" or the evel 8 "adult transition centers".....any idea? I guess that depends too.

Work release allows offenders to sign out for work and does give weekend passes after a certain amount of progress. I will tell you there is a downside to work release and that is if you test positive for a alcohol or any drug after signing out for work or a weekend pass. The offender is sent to a maximum security institution and 1 year of good time is taken. If you and he think he can remain drug and alcohol free at a transition center/work release then it is an excellent opportunity. A work camp is a secure lock up that does not allow for working in the community for pay or weekend passes. A work camp takes out road crews and does community service for free, such as mowing state property, removing debris after a storm ect.

Has anyone ever heard of a 1st time offender for drug poss with 13 months left on a class x going to work release. My son was recommended by his counselors and previous warden and Springfield, but then new temporary warden came in and said he was denying it based on class x status. Rules posted in prison from Springfield clearly state no offender can be denied based solely on a class X. Trying to understand it all.

MaddieWard is exactly right. I was recently released from IL and I can tell you this....What the rules say are one thing... What goes on at the prison is another thing. EVERYTHING is at the discretion of the warden.
You do however have some say so with Springfield.
