Default Scholarships for ex-prisoners

Yay!! The day has come that we are finally going to work release!! With that in mind, my honey has decided that he wants to actually do something with his life more than going back to prison. So- he wants to go to college and get some kind of a degree. Does anyone know of where to look for scholarships and grants for ex-prisoners? We haven't heard back from the FAFSA people but he wants something to fall back on if they won't give him any kind of funding. I know that there are scholarships out there I just don't know where to find them.
THANKS!!!!!

I don't have answers for you, but this sounds great. My hubby started taking classes inside that were relevant to up and coming jobs outside prison. AutoCad and computer stuff.

Did you post this question in the general prison talk forum? Maybe there are federal grants available? Is there such a thing as a federal grant???

Good luck.

I only posted it in this one because whatever aid is available has to be for washington state. I know that as a regular student there is fedral aid available but I don't know if he would qualify to receive any because of having a record. They are very specific on that kind of stuff.

It's unlikely that there are any grants for felons. In most cases a felon is denied any type of grant, not sure why they do this, it makes life so much harder on the inmate and the chance of him reoffending are higher if he can't be productive.
My suggestion to you is to have your inmate work closely with his CCO when he gets out. Ask him what programs are available for him.
I've heard that Goodwill Industries can work with inmates to help find jobs, that might be a good place to start!

I know that there are places where he can get scholarships because his PO told me about them so did his crew boss at work. I know that they are out there it's all just a matter of finding them. I've found some that are specific to a certain field but not what he's wanting to do.

Is there a website for this? I know a guy who's been out for one year now and he's hitting one brick wall after another. He's working with his CCO and Goodwill and they are both telling him the same thing, no grants for felons!
I'd love to present him with some good news if I can!!!

Thanks,
Ann
