dijonjake, I just wanted to welcome you to the CP Forum. You have received some wonderful advice from some very dedicated and loving members. It sounds to me like your pen-pals are very blessed to have you in their life!

As a lot of the CP regulars know, my BIL is on DR and I just wanted to say thank you to dijon and all the DR pen pals and friends from the bottom of my heart. It means so much to them.

I got a letter yesterday! I was so touched by this person. He was a bit cautious I have to say, but I do not blame him for that. He told me that my card and offer to be his friend was a real surprise. He said he usually hears from preachers wanting to save his soul or people wanting the rights to his story. I dont know his story and dont need to either. I was saddened when he asked me why "a nice lady like you would waste her time on me" .....I had to digest that for the last 24 hours. Why? Because to me, in my personal opinion no living human being is a waste of time. There is always a bright spot in everyone, it may be obscure but as long as there is breath in a persons lungs there is light. He said he loves nature and cooking too, but that is all we could possibly have in common...So that is where I will start. And he mentioned he would like to receive some of my drawings, I told him I like to draw as a part of relaxation. I think that everyone deserves love. I have made serious mistakes in my life too, but although my mistakes have cost me alot I have learned that nobody on this earth is any better than anyone else. We are all connected and we have more in common than we do in difference. Just my opinion, another thing we all have in common!!!!

I know of your PP. I have never written him, but I know someone who did/does. I read a couple of his letters and I know with a loyal and true friend who can get past the anger, he will be a great friend to have. Your letters will mean so much to him, from what I remember he really is all alone in the world. I wish you all the luck in the world.

Hi, I´m new here and this is my first post

I just wanted to add that I also had a similar experience:

I wrote to someone on DR and suddenly got a letter from another man. He said the other one didnt have any time to write me and asked whether I wanted to write to him instead. I did and it was the best thing I ever did, we have such a great friendship today and I´m so happy to have him in my life, I´m so glad he wrote me that one letter )) We´ve been writing for almost 2 years now
And I never looked up there crimes because I want to get to know them first and maybe they´ll tell me or not, to be honest, I don´t even really care about it because enough other people do and I think there are more important things to do )

Hi and Welcome to PTO . I have 4 pen pals and one of mine I inherited from my cousin!!!! He is a brilliant guy and we have a wonderful friendship. None of my penpals have ever asked me for money although I always send them a few dollars for birthdays etc. I have never regretted writing to any of my pen pals. I never ask about their crime I am not interested in judging them. I guess like all friendships sometimes things are good sometimes they get a little rough but I wouldn't change a thing.

Welcome to PTO.

I have a few DR PP and they are all very special and very unique. They face adversity head on, and teach me so much. I love all my guys and wouldn't swap them for the world.

Default D.R. Pen-Pal

Hi there,

I think I need a little advice. I have a D.R. pen-pal and we've been corresponding for about a year. I got a letter from him recently asking if I would create a website for him, and submit requests to European countries against the death penalty. He is desperate for $$. He would like people to donate to him. He wants me to spearhead this international plea for $$. I have helped him a bit in the past, not financially, but in other ways. This latest plea is not something I signed up for. Can you offer some suggestions for me on how to address his need. Thank you. So long for now.

Hi Keiko,

I had this same issue very recently. My pp is mentally retarded (mildly) and immature. I promised I'd stick by him and I will. Anyway, he came up with this grand plan to make some money and I had to tell him no. The reason is that those types of accts have to be carefully monitored and the money disbursed in a certain way. All well above my level of financial ability! I explained that to him and suggested that his family could help him with it or he could have the donations sent to his lawyer. He was angry with me for a month or so but is now writing again. You can only do what you are comfortable doing and you should never promise these friends something you can't do. To me that is crueler. I do send him $$ on occasion and that is the best I can do.

Defence funds are as Mamma said not easy to set up. They must be done properly and have to be held accountable. If he is looking just for $$ for canteen, then I am not sure, if I were in your shoes I would be very happy, being asked to do that. I send my pals money now and again, but I have many friends so it really is quite rare. I would suggest you find out if it is just commissary money he is after, or a defence fund, then go from there.

I agree with JJ and Mammas you need to know what he wants the website for and go from there.

A lot of inmates have web sites, infact I am looking to set one up for an inmate myself soon. So that's not really what concerns me. It is the $$ that makes me wonder.

Default I think go slow.

I never asked my pen pal about his crime. I did find it on the internet, just a couple of news stories. After we wrote awhile, he decided to share, and seemed very honest. I think it's better to wait and let them tell you when they trust you enough. I think they worry about being looked down on, or losing their pen pal. They usually need a lot of reassurance, I've heard. (Don't we all.)
