Thanks so much Tinkntaz for your supportive words. I did hear from my brother later that night. Not sure what the delay was, but it sure felt good to get the emails. Hoped things are back on an even keel for your loved one too.

I heard that the email system for the entire facility will be down on Monday, 1/30, so inmates will not be able to send or receive emails. Should be back up on Tuesday.

You are correct about upcoming downtime with CorrLinks. I posted a sticky about the downtime here a few days ago.

Hi Jobafett, Welcome! Sorry it took a couple of days. I was traveling for work this week. Intake at Fort Dix was quick for my brother ...only a day. But, after the county jail, he was brought to MDC Brooklyn first for a few days and then to Fort Dix so some of the "processing" could have happened in Brooklyn. I am not sure. Maybe someone else whose loved one self-surrendered knows how long it took if you went right to Fort Dix. Take care. This is quite a journey. Helps to stay in touch here.

When my husband self surrendered to Ft. Dix a couple of years ago, it took almost a week before I got any phone calls or letters from him.. It was the longest week of my life, worrying, and angry all at once.

Deacon Tom came to the East side of Ft. Dix with blessed hosts for the Catholics there. With any luck they can continue to have a religious service every week now.

Thanks Nanna. Very glad to hear that. I will check on the west side too. I know not everyone feels this way, but I, personally, think it helps some people.

it took about 2 weeks till i heard from my loved one once he was proceeded and got settled...and then its about 2 or 3 weeks till he can get his email account set up..but then its pretty cool cause he can email you 2-3 times a day..depending one if theres no lock down and he can call you everyday....so it gets a little 'easier' :/ but it's still hard ...and visiting isnt too bad there...but days like today and yesterday when i havent heard from him makes me nuts!!!!..but we have to try to focus on other things and not on bad stuff...right???

Most definitely focusing on positive, just an all around tough time and experience in general, however to see so many on here who have been hanging tough, it's very inspiring

Tink, I got a couple emails yesterday and one mid-day today so far from my brother. As you know he is on the West side.

Not sure about phone call problems. We save calls so he can call to my Mom. He has only called me a couple of times with an urgent matter he needed me to help with that needed to be discussed.

So sorry. Can't give you a reason you have not heard from your loved one. Not sure what is going on.

Hugs to you!!! These are definitely the hardest times...not knowing and being afraid to find out. Take care.

Tink, I know the phones are working today, because I got a call from my husband on the East side. They closed the east side a couple of times during last weekend due to some fighting. He told me it was mostly about gambling debts.

Glad you got word from your loved one, at least that is positive As for the rest, I have no words...other than to say there simply must be a better way to do things than that.

Tink, Sorry he had to experience the SHU. They don't have to have a reason for most of the things that they do there. I hope he gets to return to his regular room soon.

That is really, really terrible Tinkntaz....and for whole week. I do hope he can get settled back into his old room. It must be hard to start again in a new room. I am so sorry for your worries. It is really hard. Take care. Hugs

Hi everyone.

My husband just surrendered to Fort Dix yesterday and I have a few questions.

How long does it take to be approved to visit? Since Im his wife will the process be shorter?

How long before he gets a housing unit assingment will the put him in the SHU for awhile?

How much money does he need to get started and be "comfortable"?
I western unioned money to him yesterday but it was nerve racking! How do I know he got it?

hey welcome to fort dix it ususally takes about 2 months for the visits to get approved..they dotn do nothing quickly!!!it doesnt matter what you are..he has to send you the visitation form..then you fill it out..they want to make sure your not talking with other federal inmates..thats an actually question on the form......and its bascially a back ground check they do on us before they 'allow' us to visit...and he has to check with his counselor on if you were approved..they wont just tell him hes ok'd for visits..he has to ask..or you'll never know...and it takes about 2 weeks for him to be placed in his normal unit...and then he can ask for a phone and email account and thats really cool..cause he can email you everyday and a few times a day too..which is nice...as long as theres not a lock down or corrlink is down...before hes placed in his normal unit they are put in a temp holding area...once you get the visit they are pretty cool there they let you stay till 3 pm thats when they kick us out..during the week is better then the weekends more people onthe weekends and sometimes they tell people to leave..i really wish him all the luck and you to with all you have to go through..if you have any questions ask away!!!!!

Thanks tinkntaz!

He called me last night...it took about 5 days. He said he would be moved to a perm unit within a week or so. We are both excited for email. I miss talking to him everyday and 15min phone calls suck, but are better than nothing.

So far he seems to be doing OK! I am so thankful for that.

Mikayla, Sounds like you are off to a good start. You have come to the right place for support and information. It is quite a road we travel...but some good people. Welcome.

Smile Volunteer who visits and supports Fort Dix inmates

http://mainlinemedianews.com/articles/2012/02/28/main_line_times/life/doc4f4663f46f424504442791.txt

The above link will pull up an article and video about a nice woman who visits Fort Dix FCI and support inmates. What a nice thing. Seems like part of a national group that does this. Once my brother is out I think I will consider doing it at the federal prison near where I live.
