In most cases a parole hearing is granted after serving between 50 and 80% of the total time. Some sentences have a mandatory amount of time to serve, and some have no parole at all. Once that time comes up they will go to a review board and they will decide whether or not the prisoner is fit for release. Yes, it is pretty much like probation, but often it is stricter. Your husband should know within a short amount of time after entering prison when his parole eligibility will be. I believe that information is also posted on the FLDOC website.
