Hi everyone,
My dad is very mentally ill and was badly injured during a recent arrest. He is in the hospital in police custody and I am very concerned about his condition. The hospital won't give me any info (hangs up on me) and it nearly impossible to reach anyone at the sheriff's office.

Does anyone know a way that the hospital can be allowed to give me information? More importantly, is there any way I can visit or at least speak to him? I am extremely worried about him.

Have any of you been in this situation? Let me know.

If you get an answer please let me know. My bf is in a hospital in police custody and I have very limited information from him and NONE from the police or the hospital. I want to know how one would get placed in this position...what would they have to do? I assume he is hurt if hes in the hospital. Thanks.

If you have power of attorney and if he has signed a HIPAA waiver, then the hospital can give you information. This typically does not happen over the phone because they will say that it could be "anyone" on the phone.
Your best bet is to call the doctor taking care of him.
The doctor can give you information if your father gives permission! Visits vary from facility to facility and if he is in a prison ward, it is very tough to get permission. If he is in a community hospital, it is possible for the doctor to arrange for a brief visit for immediate family members only. Be prepared to provide written proof of same. I have no first hand knowledge of what goes on in Texas.
