'They want to become better moms'

Peggy Hammitt did some Christmas shopping this year for a mother who couldn’t.
As a Prison Fellowship Angel Tree volunteer, Hammitt bought socks, underwear and an electronic game for the 14-year-old son of a mother who’s incarcerated at the South Dakota Women’s Prison.
Most of the 345 inmates at the state’s correctional facility for women in Pierre are mothers; 75 percent of all incarcerated women nationwide are moms. The median sentence for female inmates at the state women’s prison is two years, which means that many young moms will return to their parental roles after they’re released from prison.
