Sorry to hear that... it IS sad that only the wealthy can afford proper representation and can pretty much get away with anything...

Good luck to you.

Having money doesn't always get you justice either. My husband had a private attorney that we paid over $60,000 too, and my husband still didn't win his case. He is currently sitting in jail for something he didn't do, so having money doesn't always get your justice either. The problem is the justice system is unjustice. They don't care about innocent people; they just want to get the case over with and move on that is why the jails/prisons are busting at the seams.

It doesn't have to be about the money. My boo was looking at 25 to life, we hired an attorney through a lawyer group found he wasn't really qualified; we paid him 5K but he got all the charges dropped and my boo only has to serve 4 yrs. He had me write to the clerk of court to get his jail time. We got his 4 yrs down to 3 - we did that without an attorney. He had a detainer on him in SC. I called the Solicitor and argued with him about why the case was bogus. I helped my boo with a speedy trial request - had to send it certified mail. That took 2yrs but we finally got a letter of no response and they told him he could petition to have the charges dropped. I called the Sheriff's department in SC explained to them what was going on and had them fax a form to Interstate Office stating the sheriff's department will not be picking him up and for them to drop the detainer. I followed up with the Interstate Office and the Office of Combined Records to make sure everything was dropped so now we don't have that over our heads anymore. I called and got him transferred closer to home. I told the transfer office that the closer prison would accept him if the holding prison would release him but that the holding prison refused. I explained that he wanted to take advantage of the programs at the closer prison. She told me she would have him transferred the next week. Everything we've done - we had to do ourselves. It was slow because I had to make people do their jobs - practically held their hand through the whole process. Soon enough I could just call and give his name and they knew. The solicitor fought me tooth and nail, he tried to convince me of my boo's guilt by virtue of his criminal record - but I stressed by looking at his criminal record he couldn't have done what you're suggesting. He wouldn't give me an inch over the phone, but when it came to the lifting the detainer he didn't fight it. What I've learned is most time we, the family members, can be more effective than attorneys because people don't want to deal with us and they know we're not going to let it go - so sometimes they will give in. My boo will be home January of next year. If your attorney dropped the ball, then I advise you to pick it up and run with it yourself... sorry about your frustration but trust me I do understand.
