CAn I put $ in an account tomorrow in JAckson? even though I can't talk to him.

I did see the jpal page...so much to learn about....Finding this webiste is one thing I am happy about today. It's been a long sad day

Yes, you can send money now. I suggest setting up an acct with Correctional Billing now, so that he can call when able. It may take a few weeks to get the first call.

Yes, they can buy store while in quarantine. They can also write letters too. When I was there phone calls were also able to be made, but there are only a limited number of phones available and there were usually pretty long lines to use them. They only have access to phones during yard time. You can also put money on his books using the Central Receipting office at:

Centralized Receipting Office
P.O. Box 700
Freeland, MI 48623-0700

To use Centralized receipting you can send a money order to this address. Make sure that when you do his name AND his MDOC number are included on the money order in the "to" area. Also make sure your name and address are included on the money order in the area provided. As for the photos I would probably wait until he has finished quarantine and gets to his final destination.

Yes they are able to receive photos, wether it be through JPay (they'll print them in black and white) or you can send them through regular mail. JPay usually gets their mail to them within 24 hours, same goes with the money in his account. Somewhere between 2 and 3 weeks he'll get a pin # and be able to call home, like anothersurvior said, he can use the phones outside or he can sign up for a time to use the phones indoors. When he gets there, he will be given 1 piece of paper and 1 envelope to write 1 letter until he orders his own supplies through the store.

I know from experience it seems so overwhelming at first but you'll work your way through things. Jpay is so neat, it allows us to write him and have the letter get to him right away. As for money it costs a bit but is quicker. For us to send $25 the other day cost $31 and some change but he had it the next day.
We try to stick to a schedule with money orders it's cheaper.
I spent a lot of time reading up on things when I fisrt found this site, seems like everything I wanted to know about someone else had already gone through..There is so much good advice from the folks on here just a question away. As I found out all you have to do is ask.

I know it is scary and overwhelming but just relax and ask questions. We've all been there and can really help. Send books thru amazon or some other major vendor while he's in RGC and set up Jpay. Write often. I wrote every single day. He will be able to call soon. He will be fine. You will be fine and we are all here for you both. Think about having him choose a power of attorney. Each prison has a notary and you can get the forms at office max or staples.
I think between all of us on pto we know more about the mdoc then they know about themselves and we also know the emotional struggles he and you will go thru. We are here for you

Hello everyone, most of the questions were answered. When you sent a money order to Freeland, Michigan make sure that on the adressbar, on second line you add: Name of your loved one and the #. This way it speeds things up.
I try to have a certain amount always in my son's account so I don't have to pay the addtional fees with J=Pay. Every penny helps.
Although the MDOC has Policies they are not always followed, and as I found out many times it dependents who the guards are and the supervisor on shift when making phone calls or anything else. Good luck and hang in there.
