Default Type of prison for his Felony

I have a basic question, since my husbands lawyer is useless. Dave was convicted of a class D and a class H felony for 2nd degree unintentional homicide. Do you think he will automatically go to a Maximum prison or could he possibly go to Medium to begin with?

Jesslynn is right...he will first go to Dodge, which is the reception center. He will go through an assessment and evaluation period (A&E) to determine what special needs he might have, what his past record was like, and various other things that will be looked at to determine what level of security is appropriate for him. Given a 11 plus years sentence in all likelihood will see him in maximum security at least for a short period of time.

As strange as it might seem to outsiders, Medium and Minimum security does not always translate into better conditions or easier time. In fact, it is often just the opposite. Many an inmate has bemoaned the fact that they were forced to leave a Maximum security institution. Just take it as it comes and hope for the best.

My best guess is he's start with being classified as maximum status. He should know soon if he doesn't already of his security classification. Even if it's just from asking other of their experience...

but just from the length of the sentence, I would be suprised if he didn't start off in a maximum security facility
He should also learn how many years until he's eligible to go to a medium security classification ( they go to PRC periodically and that's where this would be assessed)

Thanks SummerRae. Couple more questions what is PRC? And could you explain what security classification is? Thanks so much.

You might be able to search PRC in this forum to find the exact acronym, I keep thinking it's the parole review commission, but it's not the parole board... it might be program review committee....
short version, most guys see PRC every 6 or 12 months and this committee looks at their program needs, security risk and some other factors... based on the outcome of the factors, then it's determined if they are to be placed or eligible for maximum, medium or minimum security status.
My best source of this information won't be able to call for a couple weeks, so I'll write and see if he'll give me more details about what the factors are.
But whenever he's seen PRC is usually when they determine if he can get moved to another facility too... you'll hear PRC used like a verb...
I got PRC'd to medium... lol

PRC stands for Program Review Committee. Periodically they review inmates to see if their individual programs are being complied with or are appropriate, whether or not they have conduct reports that might warrant maintaining a maximum classification. PRC simply is designed to keep updated on an inmate's progress or lack of progress.

Showing initiative like volunteering, or getting involved in programs that are offered all tend to be looked upon as positives during a PRC review. How fast a person's classification changes depends upon a lot of factors. Good conduct and showing a positive attitude are definitely things any inmate should try to achieve if they want favorable reviews.
