Default Steven Staley - TX - 16 May 2012 Stayed

Steven has been given a date of Dec 1 2010. My thoughts are with him and his loved ones. He is mentally ill so there is some hope.

Mr Stanley had a date back in 2005. I remember Richard Cartwright writing about him and how he had NOBODY. ( I hope that has changed ) And that he really had some mental issue's. My thoughts and prayers are with him.

I found an old article on Steven, so the link didn't work. I have put the article into a blog to comply with the fair use policy.

The controversy surrounding Staley now is a complex issue at the
forefront of a legal debate about the death penalty in the United
States: Is it constitutional to forcibly medicate a mentally ill
Death Row inmate to make him competent enough to be executed?

Staley's attorney, Jack Strickland, says forcibly medicating Staley,
44, is cruel and unusual punishment and should be stopped immediately.

So they want to make this man well and then put him through the horror of an execution and murder him. Unbelievable !!!!!

Default Steve Staley TX Dec 1

Steven has got a stay of execution.
For the third time in five years, a mentally ill Death Row inmate has gotten a reprieve while attorneys continue a rare legal battle over whether he can be forcibly medicated to make him sane enough to be executed.

and in another article:

He was scheduled to receive a lethal injection on Dec. 1, but a judge Thursday in Tarrant County Thursday signed an order withdrawing the execution date.

This is a relief because Steve is severly mentally ill. He hasn't even been in Polunsky for 8 months or so. He has been in the Jester Unit for treatment. I couldn't imagine why they even set a date for him.

This is good news and i am so happy , but it does worry me that they want to medicate him so they can kill him. Clearly this poor man has issues ....

This man should be in a hospital, not on Death Row. I simply do not understand.

Great news,

Fingers crossed that this is a sign that he will now get the treatment he desperately needs.

..."But whether Staley will actually be executed is, at press time, unclear; his three previous dates with death have been stayed in order to determine whether he is sane enough for execution. "

Steven is a paranoid schizophrenic and has survived 3 dates. He should get a stay again but it is cruel to keep him on death row. The article is here.

And for a fourth time, it's a stay.
"The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Monday stayed this week’s scheduled execution of Steven Staley, a severely mentally ill inmate who was convicted of a 1989 robbery and murder at a Fort Worth Steak and Ale restaurant."
The article is here. Seems rather cruel and unusual to me.
