NYPurple ~ How I look forward to your updates! It's so wonderful to read how your man experiences the world outside, his newly won freedom.
And I so much like how you write! I am sooo happy for the two of you! I want to thank you for sharing this special journey with us;
your posts bring me (tears of) joy - and feed my dreams about how it will be when hubby comes home one day.

Something silly.

Lifer got his license.....his brother helped him obtain a car.

So....he called today

"I got my license"

"YAHOO"

"Give me your address so I can program it in this GPS"

"What??? WHY???"

"I only have a PO Box, that doesn't work."

This story was amazing. I too want to share this with my lifer. Unfortunately, he is lwop, but I still continue to hope that his attorney will succeed in getting him released. He says he will, it will just take time. Congratulations. Your story is the reason I joined PTO. cheers!

Just wanted to say that your post give me hope to someday be able to enjoy the man with all his newly learned skills upon release. I hope that all is going well for you, and your man. That you are enjoying his and your freedom. Take care and keep us up on you.

Blimey! I've been reading this thread on and off for a week or so now. (I know it's a lot older.. but i don't check in all the time!)

It .. is .. amazing. You've done something wonderful nypurple!

I can't say how impressed I am with you and your ex-lifer.

I'd love to show the lifer i write to the fields and countryside around where i live.. and i do sometimes travel those roads thinking she'll oneday see them, and she may yet do that. But it is a long distant dream.. kept alive by your story.
Thank you!

This morning he thoroughly enjoyed scrambled eggs (the real ones), bacon, whole wheat toast, real butter, orange juice and coffee and couldn't wait to tell me how good it was. I heard the smile in his voice, he actually chuckled; I've never heard him chuckle. My heart skipped a beat.

He went to the grocery store with cash (that was a thrill in itself, paper money) in hand and reveled at everyone swiping a card......he wondered out loud to me when did that change? He cannot wait to have a debit card but wants to wait till we are together before he christens it......in case I make a mistake he says.....those little boxes are confusing. And he asks what's up with self check out????? They trust you? And that bulk thing....can't you just put any old sticker on it????? Yes dear, life has changed.

He went to a pastry shop and bought one of each I swear. He has the sweetest sweet tooth. He slobbered onto the phone as he talked to me telling me milk never tasted so good, all he's had in countless years is powdered. Hell, food never tasted so good. That might also be that he swore he would quit smoking if released. He has the patch and is doing good.....'Don't even miss it' he says.

He is studying for his driving permit test and reads me pages from his DMV booklet all the while telling me.....roads didn't have those lines, signs have changed and my goodness you can turn right on red......LOL....we laugh. Honest to goodness laughter.

He wants a Christmas tree....but alas it is a small (he says about 2 foot short...LOL...he jokes) fake tree, but it has twinkle lights......TWINKLE....I smile, never thought I would hear that word out of his mouth. I promise him next year the biggest, fatest tree we can cut down and carry.

Now lets not talk about the cell phone; I'm surprised it still works. Besides charging it every night, all night.....Me; honey you have to let the battery die. It has been flung across the room a few times.....I downloaded the manual on line to help.......'Now write this down....step 1......' a call in a few minutes...."I've had it with this phone, why do I have to have a password for voice mail? What's up with this, everything requires a password. How am I supposed to remember them all?" Big Breath......patient voice......"It takes time...or use the same one." Him; "What? Then if they get it for one they have it for everything???" **SIGH** Starting to see the picture.....me gritting teeth. I can't wait till he gets a computer, maybe I will pay for classes.

He's getting his wardrobe together. Talk about sticker shock. Nothing green (NY Prison color), a lot of black...I ask who do you think you are the Italian Johnny Cash? He asks, when did corduroy's go out of style? I can't find any. Uh about a minute after you went to prison in 1974 I tell him. Mmm, well I like the sweaters anyway and whew Levi's haven't changed much.

This week he has an appointment with a 'real' physician. We made a list. He has had many problems with his knees/back and kidneys. He's twice agonized over passing stones in the past year while DOC's gave him nothing for pain. He has also suffered from a cleft palate from a broken nose in a fight about 35 years ago. Over the years it has become unbearable as he breathes poorly from one nostril. DOC's would not spend the money for surgery.

Oh and a real hair cut. But I will not repeat what he said about the cost. Thank God he didn't request a shave.......

Every day is an adventure. I am honored to share his excitement and joy. I am pleased he asks me silly questions without embarrassment; like how do I get directory service on my phone? Gosh, that's right, back in the day we dialed 0 for the operator.

He tells me in a much bolder voice that he loves me...he loves loving me. I tell him he is my everything and it is only the start of our journey. If he only knew..........I plan on making sure he does.

Aww...I seriously smiled the entire time I was reading this!!

Wow this was just interesting to learn the things that confuse someone. He's been gone since before I was born so imagine the entire fads and such that have been missed. Crazy. Tis is a great thread!
