Can i just add that around the last(2nd) week of his orientation you may want to starting calling to try and get an appointment, so that you will have and appt 2 weeks out after he is done with orientation. And yes you can wear sandles. Just about the only shoes that are restricted are shower shoes.

Hello- I'm a newbie to Ironwood too. My hubby is on his way there right now. I am from northern California, not looking forward to this drive.

Hi Honda and Hizgirl. Welcome to both of you. I'm sorry you will both have such a long drive. I hope you'll still get to visit. When you ladies have some questions, I'd be happy to answer what I can. My son's been at Ironwood for 1 1/2 years, so we've kind of got it down by now!
Again, I'm sorry your loved one will be further from you. California Mom

How can I get his address and housing uinit? Do I just wait for a letter or can I call and get it? I want to send some paper and stamps.

How often are they able to call?

IS visiting prestty relaxed enviorment or is it really strict? I have kids just want to make it as comfortable for them as possible.

I got my hubby's housing a few hours after he got there, they were surprised that I was calling and getting it just a few hours after he got there, he left in the AM by 4pm I called and got his housing. So if you know he has left then just wait til 4pm and call or the next morning for sure.

How often are they able to call? Once hubby was off orientation he called me almost everyday, then he got a job and calls every two days.

IS visiting prestty relaxed enviorment or is it really strict? Visiting is really nice and laid back, it's one of the nicest visiting places I've been.

There is a big area for the kids to play, a big play box with toys, and a big thingy with games, my son was so content in there it was not funny! I'm sure your kids will adjust, it's like a big play ground for them.

Call the prison and push the prompt for "inmate services" I think it's R&R or the mailroom and they will tell you his housing info.

How often are they able to call? It depends his status, once he is A1A, he can sign up for the phones, depending on the yard, my son usually can get two phone times per day but he calls between 2-3 p.m.

I've never visited at other prisons, except Chino and have never had any problems at ISP. As long as you follow the rules, you won't have any problems.

I think you'll be very happy with how fast the mail is. Much better than the other prisons my son has been at. We usually get his letters in 2-3 days & he gets ours within 3-4 days. We do live in southern CA, so I'm sure that helps too.

Its not hot climates, they are considered photo sensitivity medications. My mother works as a psychiatric/drug rehab nurse, has been for the last 15 years. She told me that its not the heat that is a major concern it's direct exposure to sun light. So during the summer time they need limit their exposure to sunlight. This goes for where ever you happen to be.

Oh FYI, if he had not been completely endorsed as CCC he's going to have to start the process all over again here.
