Default Intro--luvelydenise

Hi,
I live in Michigan and I just joined PTO today. My husband was incarcerated and was released in 2006. He had a stroke in 2005 which left him paralyzed from the shoulders down. He had the stroke while in prison. He stroked out for 3 days until he finally got some help. It was too late. The stroke did major damage.

Although I did not know much about legal issues, I was on the phone with lawyers, MDOC, State Representives and anyone else that I could think of.

We had a medical parole hearing and my husband was granted a medical parole. I take care of him at home. It has been 6 years now that he has been home. So much for health care while incarcerated.

Thanks. I am still trying to learn the site. It is very early in the a.m. My day starts at 4 a.m. I bathe hubby and dress him, give his meds and start his feeding(peg tube). I have a nurse while I work but sometimes, I get him ready before she comes. This gives us time to communicate. When he first came home in 2006, all that he would do is stare. I would stare back at him because I did not know what to do. My field is not nursing. As the months went on, I was talking to him as I always did. I was not looking for a response because I knew that he would not give me one. That day, I asked him a question and he nodded his head up and down as if to say yes. I asked him if he could understand me. He nodded his head yes again. I lost it! I could not believe it! Every happy emotion that a person could have came out of me.

I do not let him lay in the bed all day. I make sure that he is completely bathed and dressed and up in his lounging chair. If he goes shopping or out somewhere, the nurse and I put him in his wheelchair and off we go.

He has the same personality that he did before the stroke. He had no memory loss. I can ask him questions of events and try to catch him up by giving him the answer to the question wrong and he will nod no if the answer is wrong.

He has his "moments" too. He gets mad, cries, laughs when things are funny and loves to get his point across.

Well, I guess I need to get ready for work. Thanks again for your kinds words.
