Default No money during intake?

This is what my son wrote to me in his most recent letter. I did not realize this. There sure was a lag time between when he mailed it and when I received it. This letter was mailed on December 30th but I just received it today. And he's less than 15 miles away.

He tells me that although he was notified I put money on his books, he's not allowed to use it while he's in intake. So he is out of envelopes and paper and can not write again until Feb 1st (if he's still there), when each inmate is given another small supply.

On the up side, he's going to church, AA meetings, and has joined a bible study. He also quit smoking. I was so uplifted by his letter that I'm very disappointed I won't be getting any more for awhile.

On another topic...
I am also wondering what happens when one is sentenced to prison for one crime, but probation for another crime. Once he is released, does he start his probation for the other crime? (it was a misdemeanor committed in a different county than the county that sentenced him to prison)

Thanks!
Jo

It is true that they cannot go to commisary during intake. My husband was given 5 envelopes when he got there and had to make them last until he moved out of intake. Once he is transferred, he will be able to order commisary and then will be able to write you.

I'm not completely sure about the probation question, but it seems to me that if he was already on probation in a different county, it will probably continue to run concurrently and he may not have that probation when he gets out depending on how long his sentence is. Of course I am thinking logically and we all know how "logical" the system is, so I could be completely wrong about that. His lawyer or probation officer could probably give you more accurate information about that.

I can see why you are looking forward to more letters like that one! Good for him.

The probation in the other case should be running while he is in prison. If the length of the probation is longer than his prison sentence, then he will still be on misdemeanor probation once he's released.
