Default The Fight to STOP FRPs

Nozzolio: Cut conjugal visits

State Sen. Michael Nozzolio is continuing his fight against conjugal visits.
This time, he is looking to eliminate the program.

Legislation introduced by Nozzolio in the New York State Senate, S3747, would require the commissioner of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to “permanently terminate” the Family Reunion Program, or conjugal visit program. The measure also would prohibit any program from forming that would allow inmates and their families to have private meetings for extended periods of time.
Nozzolio’s bill passed the Crime Victims, Crime and Correction committee — the committee that Nozzolio chairs — on Tuesday.
Nozzolio said Friday that the conjugal visit program was an issue that drew attention when he unveiled his “You Cut” ballot last year and “tens of thousands” of New Yorkers said the program should be cut.

“This expenditure, at this time, is inappropriate,” he said. “It costs too much and is a program not worthy of taxpayer support.”

Legislators need to stop calling these conjugal visits and refer to them what by what their named "Family Reunion Program". Conjugal visits makes people think that this is all about inmates having sex which isn't true. For my husband and I it's a time to be in a normal relationship within prison walls. We cook together, we watch TV together, we live like a normal couple for the 44 hours we are allocated. There are families, children, mothers, fathers and siblings all involved in this program. The public needs to be aware that this is what the program is about. Even the petition, which I signed, reads conjugal visits where is should read Family Reunion Program.

IMO and only my opinion i agree with him. my husband is in prison he shouldnt be entitled to any kind of personal time with any members of our family. i used to get frp's and believe me it was mainly all about sex. when he transferred to a facility that didnt allow them i was ok with that then he went back to a place that allowed them but i wouldnt participate anymore. guess i just realized as long as he kept getting all these benefits he would never stay home.

he tries this every year-in the past it has gone nowhere. the prisons know the value of these visits as a perk for inmates and to encourage good behavior. I think I shall write him a personal letter.

I disagree it is all about sex. My husband and I have participated in FRP since 1997....
This time is so special for us where we laugh, cry, make love over and over from our hearts, cook together and we sit next to one another while we eat, we smile, we talk and talk, we listen to beautiful music together and dance together...
I can act like my goofy self and we laugh. We are able to go outside a little and take a walk holding hands. We sit on the porch and relax together.

I recently got off a trailer visit with my husband and I experienced his seizure that he never had one in front of me. He has them in his sleep. He can't remember when he wakes up and I was there to see what he goes through.

If this is taken away from the men and families who really appreciate this time together and not take it for granted the men will not care and who knows what can happen. My husband said this is what keeps him sane and is able to go about his every day knowing we have our time alone.

This can not be taken away from us....

The Family Reunion Program in my opinion is something that more states should look at. My cousin who is now incarcerated, never knew his dad. His dad was locked up from the time he was 3 years old till he was 28. He and I talk about how he wish he could of gotten to know his dad, during his formative years. Not saying this would have steered him to another path, but it probably would not have hurt. I always think how selfish some of us sound, when we discredit the FRP program, and say "they (prisoners) don't deserve it". The one who does not deserve something the most are the children of the inmates. Why are they paying the most by not having a relationship with a parent w/o CO watching, and talking down their paarent during a visit. I cannot imagine not having my father or mother in my life. A child needs and wants their parent. However they can get it. I receive FRP visits with my husband, and hell I deserve them too, LOL.

I am friends with more mothers who go on FRPs than wives. Nozzolio calls it conjugal visits because he's trying to get rid of them. People on this site should know better, even if we are a wife and not a parent or child or other relative, that FRPs are most certainly not all about sex. I believe it is Osborne Association that provides transportation and assistance for children to go on FRPs with their incarcerated mothers.

FRP Is NOT only about sex. There are alot of mothers/fathers/grandparents/children of the inmates that need that time/interaction with with their loved ones. There are toddlers, that may have been taken from the mother during her incarceration that need to see their moms. etc etc etc... Why would you say that Barbie??

on my FRPs there have always been as many mothers and other family members as wives. I think this program is critical to maintaining family ties. I would love to see success rates inside and out for familiies who participate. And remeber, many will not bring children to a visit room-and this gives the children a real opportunity to spend time with their parents. thinking it is about sex and only sex-ignores the myriad of other family members who participate.

I am so sorry this has happened to you. But when my husband and I go I see so many mothers that go as well. I've also seen wives who are taking their teenage sons (who they don't have to bring) with them on the FRP visits. So many do benefit in ways other than just sexual intercourse.

Hugs to you!!!

'conjugal visits" are only ever just about sex when thats all you and your partner have to offer !!!! i am beyond pissed off with this ish. a waste?! really?? if it wasn't for frp half of these men wouldnt give a ish about anything because they have nothing to look forward to. frps to my family are not about sex, its about my son whose dad is serving a 17 year sentence being able to spend some quality, normal time with his dad !!!! waste of tax money? since when they care about what i spend MY tax money on, oh yes when its not for them !!

I have been hearing different things regarding this bill. Last night I was told that this item was dead in the Senate. But when I went to the NY Senate Open Legislation page I find that this bill is on the active list for today. This is the first time I saw it on the active list since we were informed of this bill. It has always been on the floor calendar only. We need to be a more powerful voice if we want this bill not to pass. Here is the link I found this morning:
