Default In State Jail but serving TDC time?

My fiancé was just transferred from Holliday unit to Travis Jail. He's not serving state time so why is he there? Could this be a good or bad thing?

Several State Jails also house TDCJ inmates. I know that Hutchins is one that does. From my understanding the only ones that will go to a state jail to be housed are ones with small sentences, like 2 years, I think.

As far as TDC is concerned it is just a place to keep him and is neither good nor bad as far as his sentence or parole chances or anything like that. By being at a state jail facility he is limited in the types of things that he can have which can be considered a bad thing, such as fan, hot pot or clock/radio. Also, educational and vocational classes are limited in state jails but with the amount that has been eliminated from the ID units that difference is less than it used to be. Some state jails also tend to be worse as far as overall discipline (white and gray) which can make for a more inhospitable atmosphere.

I went to Woodman State Jail for "intake" after sentenced to 5 years TDC. Every day there counted and I left after a month to a TDC unit.

Yes. If he has a concurrent state jail sentence then usually they'll serve the concurrent time at a state jail.

I don't know if this is true or not- but this is what I was told when I called to find out about my son who is in state jail serving state jail time. I thought I had the wrong unit because the party I was speaking with kept talking about TDCJ offenders. She said they call TDCJ offenders inmates and state jail offenders confinees. She said the state jail offenders are not allowed to hold jobs, so all the work is done by the TDCJ offenders and without them, they would have no one to work- does that make sense?

harper506,
That's interesting and I don't think they gave you a totally correct answer. Up until earlier this week my son was at a TDCJ facility serving state jail time and held a job in the laundry.

All units state jail or tdcj has both most tdcj in state jail do has a shorter sentence it all depends what units have available space but no offender will be in a state jail longer than 2 years

Terminology is correct - inmates versus confines - but, as teddy1955 wrote, it is not necessarily true about what they said about jobs. Perhaps a given warden at a given facility tries to operate that way for their own reasons but I don't think it is true across the board.

My BF was sentenced to one year tdcj and got to Middleton unit in Abilene on December 7th. Today they sent him from Middleton to the Clements unit here in amarillo (where we r from) then to Formby unit in plainview which is about an hour away from me. Thats a good thing but its a state jail facility and I was worried that good ol tdcj messed up something. Luckily they say it happens all the time and his prd is still the same so im glad for that!!
