Child rapist pleads guilty in Mass.

LAWRENCE, MASS. (AP) -- A Salem, Mass., man convicted of raping a child in Maine 18 years ago has pleaded guilty to the same crime against two Salem brothers.

In Lawrence Superior Court, 72-year-old Edward Lapanne admitted that he raped the boys -- then ages three and six -- while his girlfriend was baby-sitting them. Prosecutors say the rapes happened between 2001 and 2002.

Lapanne was sentenced to seven years in prison.

In 1986, Lapanne was sentenced to eight years in a Maine prison for child rape in a case involving children between the ages of five and eleven. He was deemed a "high risk" sex offender after his parole.

But Salem police say they didn't learn that until after his arrest in the Salem case in 2002. They say Maine authorities never entered his previous record into the state and national database of criminal offenders.
