Question Classifications at Camp Hill

I have a friend who has been incompetent to stand trial for the past 10 months, but I'm sure eventually he will be convicted. I am wondering if he may get lucky and be in medium security? He is only 23 and he is mentally ill. He's been pyschotic for quite a while now.

I worry what might happen to him in a max security if he goes there. He had never lived away from home and was on disability for the MI, so hadn't even worked jobs. He is very naive.

When an inmate goes to Camp Hill, and they are being classified, if they are in for murder, do they automatically go to a maximum or super max prison, or do they look at age and actions, and maybe send to a medium security?

Thanks for any information.

It depends on how long of a sentence he got. Is he going in for murder? If that's the case, I believe they will send him to a maximum facility. If they do that, I think that they will house him in a mental health or special needs unit.

Yes, for murder. That would be a natural life sentence. So that would mean: Frackville, Forest, Fayette, Greene or Graterford. I saw Graterford has a mental health unit. But, I thought I have read in these units they are deprived of the same rights as GP, like having personal property such as books, paper and pencil, commisary, etc. Is that true? Anybody know? Thanks in advance.

I believe he would go where they house murderers and I believe that Graterford is one of those prisons. If he is placed in an MHU, they won't allow him to have anything that he could possibly hurt himself with.

I was an inmate at Frackville for two years. I had friends who were convicted of murder. A maximum security prison only means that they are allowed to house level 4 & 5 prisoners. One of my inmate friends, was a convicted murderer. He was classified level 2, the same as me. We didn't even live in cells. I know the inside of a max prison like Frackville. It's anything like the TV shows. Its a fairly peaceful and safe environment.

Thank you so much for that insight! That makes put my heart at ease. So they will evaluate his behavior, rather than just looking at his crime and saying he has to be a level 4 or 5. I'm pretty sure they will classify him lower then. He won't be giving anyone a hard time. Thank you for your information.
