Default Atty Gen Bill Schutte Announces Plan

IS this guy totally off his rocker?

Jackson law enforcement await specifics in Attorney General Schuette's police plan

http://www.mlive.com/news/jackson/in...ent_await.html
Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette was scant on further details Friday regarding his plan to put more police officers on the street and keep repeat violent offenders behind bars longer.

Schuette was not pressed much about his new sentencing guidelines for repeat violent offenders. He said the Michigan Department of Corrections would be able to handle a potential increase in longer-term inmates and commended Director Dan Heyns on his work at the department.

Assuming stable annual crime, arrest, charging and plea bargaining practice, court disposition, and sentencing frequencies and patterns (other than for the proposed statutory change), there would be a need for 17,798 additional prison beds within 25 years (after which stability would be reached) under the 4 strikes 25-year mandatory minimum sentence part of the proposal.

Of the nearly 18,000 additional prison beds needed:
7,350 would be needed for affected future offenders whose contemporaries now receive non-prison sanctions for the specified crimes upon their 4th+ felony conviction, and

10,448 of the additional prison beds would be needed for affected future offenders whose contemporaries
now receive minimum prison terms shorter than 25 years for the specified crimes upon their 4th+ felony conviction.
About 300 of the additional prison beds would be needed by the end of the first year for affected future offenders whose
contemporaries now receive non-prison sanctions.

The shortest minimum prison term is 1.2 years for offenders who already receive a prison sanction for the specific crimes as
their 4th+ felony conviction, so the additional prison bed impact for those offenders would not begin until the second year following passage, when some of them would then begin to remain incarcerated because of the 25-year mandatory minimum rather than leaving the prison system.

Yeah Sandymom, I'm concerned about this guy also. He's totally going in the opposite direction of the rest of the world. Longer sentences and strengthing the drug law, especially those concerning pot. He needs a lesson in fiscal reality.

I'm sure as the attorney general he knows that the prosecutors stack the charges. We can expect everyone who goes before a judge to be found guilty of at least four charges.

I think Schutte has found a way to reduce the unemployment figures. It is no coincidence that the cities with the highest unemployment rates also have the highest crime rates. Unemployment only counts people that are "looking for work." If you are in prison, you are not looking for work.
Various studies have found unemployment rates of 50 percent or higher for former prisoners nine months or a year after their release. So keep prisoners in longer and keep unemployment figures way down. Then hire 1000 more police officers specifically in high unemployment/high crime areas.

As far as Schutte and pot; Schuette is a hypocrite, for he has admitted smoking marijuana (ILLEGALLY) when he was a college student. Now he ignores the law and wastes taxpayer time and money chasing down legit medical marijuana patients.

Snyder has committed to reducing our prison population and putting more funding into re-entry. http://michiganpolicy.com/index.php?...efs&Itemid=348

I agree Schutte is heading Michigan backwards. Time for a RECALL

Do you think they will release parole violators that returned to prison for having bb guns? Do you think they will have to do the full 60 months or do you think its possible for them to be released after 24 months?

I think Gov. Snyder is working with the Director of the Dept. of Corrections to get as many people out as they can without causing an uproar in the media and with the prison guard unions, prosecutors et.

I hope that's true. My son is 40 today and it's not secret that he been in and out for a long time. He made poor choice in girfriends too and liked pot. Shuette is making a huge mistake. A recall sounds good right now.

I want to apologize if I offended anyone when I said my son made poor choices in girlfriends. He is to blame too. I guess I wanted to vent because he is 40 and should be out here. He has missed out on so much.

There is a recall attempt on Atty Gen Bill Schuette.
http://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw/in...lement_ha.html

This recall is headed by the medical marijuana peeps and I am not in the group, but I would sign because of his horrendous attack on prisoner rights. I don't know where to sign the recall, if anyone can find anything please post it here.
