Festivals are usually one day picnics. Usually held outside with music and a cookout (hot dogs and hamburgers). You can visit under less structured atmosphere than the visit room. Some are held by different religious groups; some are just general held by the inmate benefit committee. If it rains, they usually move to the gym.

The inmate must buy the tickets from Commissary--sooner the better. Anyone that can visit can go to a festival.

Actually I think there is a rule about that, if the prisoner has had a family member visit in the 90 days prior to buying the ticket, then persons who are not family members can't go to the festival. At least that's how it is at some of the max's where we do festivals. If one is married, or related, then it's not an issue.

I went to my son's festivals on Saturday. I really enjoyed it. It was put on by the church there so there was a lot of singing. I saw a side of my son that I didn't know existed. It was more relaxed and I got to meet some of his "friends" that he met. They had it catered by sysco. The food was good and it was funny to watch these guys just load up their plates and over stuff themselves.

My son told me that only family members that have visited him more than twice was allowed to go. Not sure if that's for every place. If you have a chance to go, then go. It's a great thing to share.

I'm going to my first festival on July 14th - the day after hubby's birthday. I'm so excited!!! He's under the impression that it will NOT take place outdoors so if anybody has been to a festival at Clinton I'd appreciate the inf. Thanks.

I know you didn't ask me but, the location of the festival is really dependent on the facility, what else is going on, who is sponsoring it, etc. I have been to one that was outside and a religious one that was inside. Yes, your loved one can walk around with you which was one of my favorite parts. When outside, you can lay out on the grass and talk, hold each other, kiss, and rarely get spoken to you by a CO unless its getting to heavy (even though some have gone way past "heavy" LOL). You can call your loved one's counselor for the festival schedule, but I believe there are a couple of them coming up for Clinton in June and July. However, to find out which one he is eligible for will depend on his block, who is sponsoring, etc.

I attended a Catholic event once at Clinton and it was in the gymnasium. We weren't there long enough to get to any other events.

Please don't bring children to festivals..its really not very child friendly with the things that go on in there..remember an inmate is going to take whatever opportunity he can.

this is not true for the religious affiliated festivals. Children are fine there. Too bad there are those who ruin the other festivals for children and parents, grandparents.
