Default What countries can a convicted felon from the US permanently move to?

I've always wanted to move to a different country. Now I have this felony for armed robbery hangin over my head =\.

I was told the following countries will not care at all. Cambodia, Vietnam, Romania, Venezuela, and most of the countries in Africa.

Well that would be fine if I were rich, but the economy of those countries is so much worse than the mediocre one we have in America right now. I was hoping to move up in terms of economy stability in a country like Norway or Switzerland, maybe even Luxembourgh.

Also, there's an extremely good chance I will be getting a withhold, which is Floridas version of plea guilty, do your time/probation/whatever, and it's not on your record. I know it's not completely off your record as FBI background checks and the courts can still see it. How will this effect my ability to move to another country?

I am from Romania. It's not a bad country, and we have everything that the US has here, but you have to make good money to have a decent lifestyle. My husband is getting deported to Romania in the summertime, because he overstayed his visa here, and will also be convited (with a withhold of adjudication) just like you because he's also being convicted in Florida. I really don't think any of those countries really check your criminal record, especially since you're telling them that you're visiting and you also have a US passport. I admire your decision for wanting to move, I know from close friends how hard it is with being a convicted felon, especially with just everyday rights you lose. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Actually as far as those countries go, Romania would be my top pick. I do infact have a couple of questions, mostly pertaining to getting a job.

First of all are you telling me to just say I'm visiting and then overstay? Wouldn't the government find out what I was doing when I tried to rent an apartment or get a job? I know in the US the government keeps tabs on all of that and it can be extremely difficult to find work without a work visa, and most apartments won't let you in without proof your'e allowed to live there. Does it work differently in Romania?

Also, in regards to needing to make good money to have a decent lifestyle. I don't exactly have a college degree, but I do have some trade skills. I was thinking of going to be a building maintenance tech as most apartment complexes (atleast in the USA) give you a free apartment in addition to your base pay when you get that job.

I am from Switzerland and to come and stay here you need to have some people that help you. To come in as a visitor is no problem, but to get a job is hard, you need to talk the language and find a job that let you make enough money. The most easy way is to get married and your spouse aply for a permanet visa. But the live is much more controled and to have a bit a good life you need a good education that count here.
One way to try it is to go to a language school and learn german, french or italian and you can be able to get the visa for a time, you will know if you like the country, the people and if you will be able to get a job.
Its not easy but it can be done.
If you like to know more, pm me.

This is what I found out.

This is extremely difficult to attain. I can't think of any country, that would take you without an advanced degree or a desirable career. Some countries will allow you to naturalize if you invest a considerable sum of money in their economy, but we're talking considerable.

Are you of European descent? Some countries (Germany is one, I believe) will allow you to claim citizenship by ancestry extending over several generations.

Your only other options, as I see it, are marriage or University.

I think your best bet would be to fix on a place you really want to live, go as a tourist, make sure your impressions of the place line up with reality, and concentrate your efforts from there. Even if you're not "skilled worker" material you can surely get sponsorship from some employer. Or alternatively find a US company to place you over there?
