Default Getting Married in Federal Prison

I need some help! How do we got about getting married. My boyfriend is in the federal prison MD and he has been there a year. We wanted to get married before they moved him. Does anyone know the steps that need to be taken to get this done?

He has to make a request to his unit team! Is he in a medium, low or a camp? If he's in a camp, he can get furlough to go to the county clerk with you to get a marriage license. If he's in a low or higher they won't give him furlough so then you either have to convince the county clerk to come to the prison for the marriage license (I've heard other PTO members do it that way) or you can get married via proxy, if your state allows that. My BFs in medium but his security classification's low and we're trying to get married but it's like hitting our heads against a brick wall.

Or you can always get a proxy marriage! A proxy marriage is when a person stands in the place of your fiance. There are only a handful of states that grant it but it rather simple. The easiest states to get a proxy is Texas and Colorado for inmates. I do believe you can call the county clerks office and request from them to send you the paperwork, if not, you will have to go there and get it. You then send it to him (your fiance), he fills it out and then you go back to the county clerks office, pay I think it was like $70 bucks for the marriage certificate (oh and you will have to make an appointment with the judge to perform the marriage (county clerks will give you a list of judges who does them) and indicate the date on the paperwork also indicate who will be standing in place of your fiance, "the proxy"). Then you take the certificate, your proxy and go to the judge appointment time and get hitch! It's really that simple. There is another payment at the judge but I am not sure, something under a hundred bucks I think.

Good LUCK!

Thank you for the information. He has been locked up a year. He hasnt gone for his sentencing yet, He goes in June. But he wants to get married before they move him. I am in Md so i do believe that I dont need a proxy. But I am still researching it. Thank you guys. This website has been very helpful and encouraging...

Well we are moving right along.. Come to find out all he had to do was request the paper work form the chaplain.. it was only 1 piece of paper. He filled it out just out. HE and I had to write a letter to the warden with our information and why we wanted to get married. Then I was allowed up to 4 witnesses. he could only have one and they had to be on his visiting list. Now i have to go get the marriage certificate which I am gonna do on MOnday. oh and we had to find a minister because they dont have one in his facility that will marry us. I thought they would give us a date but the warden asked us what date did we want to do it. So right now we are just waiting on the minister to agree to do it.. I hope its not real expensive. Oh yeah and I need to get his ring which Im doing this weekend....
