Default Federal time and the governor

Hello Everyone,

my question is, if your LO is doing federal time, and the crime was NY was setenced in NY but, doing his Federal time in NJ, does the NJ Governor make the rules ,or do we pay attention to NY, or the federal Government (Congress) for example ,I see The Governor of Georgia, making changes that make sense , any info would help.. I am Sorry, I'm new to this and learning... and I do want to get invloved to make a better change , if that is at all possible.

State government does not have anything to do with federal prisons. Governors only manage state prisons. Hope that this helps.

That's correct, if the US Congress ever did anything to help prisoners (very unlikely) all federal prisoners in any state would benefit. The opposite happens more frequently and then they all suffer.

Another big factor are the policies and regulations implemented by the bop, which doesn't need a law to do something like charging medical copayments or fining inmates who receive conduct writeups. They are a law unto themselves.

Thank you both so much for answering me. Yes, they both helped. I wish there was a organization we could join , to become one voice, instead of just me emailing my senator all the time, about the wacky laws in place.

The BOP,, Federal Bureau of Prisons send them to the facilities that are located within their home region. Nyc, jersey, Pennsylvania are all in the north east region so he could have been sent to any facility in those states. If you go to bop.gov it will give you a map and it shows what states are included in the region. The facility they end up getting sent to within that region (near or far) is based on a point system, low, medium and high, then there's camps as well, it depends on how many points he has and so forth, for instance, my fiance is from DC, they sent him to fort Dix in jersey, a low but when he got in trouble and his points went back up, they sent him to upstate ny, a medium. Hope that helps.

The BOP can send an inmate anywhere they want. They can send someone from NY to CA if they see fit. My husband says that if BOP believes an inmate to be a "problem" they may send them out for "Diesel Therapy". Yes, I had to ask what that was... It is a Bus Ride to another facility and then another facility and then another facility.

There is! Both FEDCURE and FAMM are organisations that work to improve the federal prison system!
