Default Sex offender employment?

Am I totally screwed in regards to a job? I was convicted last year and haven't had a job since.

I have a computer degree from a good English college, with some experience.

We don't have a public list in the uk, but if an employer was to search my name on the internet my information about my case would come up.

Should I changed my name? Then simply lie about it? Do any other sex offenders have any success stories when it comes to employment?

I really want a job, any job!

My lifelong friend is an SO and has been out for several years looking for work as a truck driver. He got a job driving a cement delivery truck and kept it for a few months but got fired because he couldn't get along with the drug peddling management. That was about 5 years ago and he finally gave up looking and is now self-employed doing odd jobs.

Since you are in the UK things are somewhat different I am certain. Self-employment would be the ideal thing since your background would never be an issue because you could build up a base of references.

Short of doing that I would have to admit I would go with avoiding my background altogether. I'm not an advocate of deception, but when your back is against the wall there is the matter of survival. The way I look at it is if I tell the truth I am certain not to get the job. If I avoid the truth I might get hired and just maybe the truth will never come out. If it does, so what. At least I had a job that I otherwise would not. This is all assuming you do not have to answer to the authorities about your employment like we do here in the states while on parole.

What I've found works is, where it asks if you've ever been convicted of a crime on a job application, DON'T write down your offenses without explanation, or your application will likely end up in the trash and you'll never get an interview.

Instead, just write "Please discuss with me at interview" which often piques an employer's curiosity and at least gives you a foot in the door to explain yourself.

I wouldn't lie about what specific charge you were convicted of, since they can easily check. But you could certainly minimize what you did during the interview. For example, if you were guilty of a crime against a child, say your victim was "slightly underage" unless age data on your victim is public like it is in some U.S. states.

If your crime involved assault against an adult, you could say that your ex-girlfriend/boyfriend was bitter about you breaking up with her/him, and pressed charges.

I know it may not be exactly honest, but most employers won't dig down past what's available on the public registry or what a simple background check might turn up, so they might just accept your version of events and give you a chance.

I just wanted to add that I'm not a sex offender myself, but have friends who are and this is what they've told me they have successfully done to get jobs.

Back when I was on probation, my P.O. said I'd never be able to get a job handling cash due to my burglary/theft conviction. Wish he could see me now, working a hotel front desk. HAHA!

Good luck.
