Default Thrift shopping tips

So ladies I have some tips for you. Recently I have came across a few thrift shops in my area like Good Will & Salvation Army. There I have found name brand quality clothing for my boyfriend such as Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, Eddie Bauer & Nautica for all under 9$! Although they are hand me downs they are in great condition, some brand new. Of course I wash them before sending, but I'd thought you ladies would like this idea to save some money in your pocket and still be able to send your man clothes.

I will try to post daily tips

Lol my boyfriend is in a state jail so I can send him any color shirt as long as its not black, orange, or grey. I can send as many as I want along with button downs & greens. But no problem! Just see what he likes and see if the thrift store might have it. I brought a RL shirt for $1.99! Def can't go wrong

This will sound vaguely ridiculous, but check it out for yourself. Some thrift stores throw away items that have been on the sales floor for a month, which have minor defects, or which they just plain cannot identify. Unless your neck of the woods has an enforced ordinance against dumpster diving, check it out.

Remember that even if broken, anything with a motor on it can be stripped for the copper ($3.75 a pound recently). Much the same for anything aluminum (93 cents a pound at the moment I believe). Usable clothing or other items that didn't sell in a thrift store just might sell on eBay or Craigslist (if you have an eye for designer labels, you're in for some surprises).

And the nice thing about anything that turns up in the trash....if it turns out to be of no use to you, you can always put it back where you found it.

I recently purchased a kitchen table for 10 bucks. Then two chairs for a total of 13. Then the store was closing and they had two more chairs for free. A can of spray paint to make the chairs the same color and I have. New kitchen set for 25 bucks!!

I have had two kitchen tables. The first came from a thrift store for $10--nice rectangular oak thing with no leaves but the legs came off so it would fit in the little hatchback I was driving at the time. It suited me just fine, but then one day....someone moved out of this complex and threw away a beautiful 1920s dining room table complete with built-in leaf. I simply could not let that go to the landfill. Nearly killed myself hauling it up here, but it cleaned up with a bit of Old English (great stuff for the frugal--one bottle lasts a lifetime) and is an absolutely wonderful piece of furniture. A bit large for a one-bedroom apartment but I love it. The "original" found a good home with a friend and so lives on.

I take lots of donations directly to the big Salvation Army stor in the city nearest us. They will give you a receipt IF YOU ASK and on that receipt is a small couponh for 25% off everything for one shopping trip at Salvation Army. It is fantastic. I saved over $100 on that trip.

I recently went to GoodWill here and I bought my daughter (3.5 years old) Brand new Children's Place jeans for $2.49 each. I bought 4 pairs of them! Plus when I got home and was tucking in the pockets(before washing), I found (2) $5 bills in one of the pockets. I didn't have to really pay a dime for them after I found the $5 bills! It pays to check the pockets of the jeans there, just in case!!!

If you donate to the Salvation Army or similar, you can ask for a "donation receipt" if the item(s) have potential value. That's tax-deductible!

Goodwill locally has had a card that they stamp every time you spend $10 or more. When you have 10 stamps, you get $10 off your next purchase. Basically a 10% discount--you just have to remember the card!

I just wanted to add in addition to Goodwill,Salvation army and Craigslist you might also be interested in seeing if your area(s) have a local chapter of Freecycle. It's a yahoo group and everything is the best price...Free! I've gotten books, clothes, dishes etc all in perfectly good condition.Just thought I'd share : )
