He lives in NM and got caught in OK hauling a very large load of marijuana - that would make the feds interested, not just the State of OK.

He needs a lawyer. If he can't afford one, one will be appointed for him. 600 lbs is an awful lot of marijuana with consequences that could mean decades in prison. Hopefully he can give the feds information in exchange for a much better alternative. But, if he absolutely no idea what he was hauling, he'll have absolutely no information to deal in exchange for a lighter charge and he'll get screwed.

He needs an attorney. He needs an attorney experienced in federal drug trafficking cases.

assuming he's convicted and sent to prison, the feds will place him in a federal facility. They try to keep it within 500 miles of "home". He could also face state time, and that would be in OK barring interstate compact.

PDs are like every other profession - there are really good ones out there, and really bad ones out there. At the federal level, he's not going to get a total rookie.
