Default Intro--aer197614 from Mississippi

Hi everyone!

My boyfriend has been incarcerated now for three years. He is serving a twenty year sentence for a fatal car accident that took the lives of two people. Your first thought, I'm sure, is this must be DUI related.. answer is NO.. He is a first time offender and was charged with culpable negligence manslaughter and given a forty year sentence to run concurrent-so 20 year sentence. His first year was served at Green County and then Leake County. Because of his charge, he is not eligible for parole but he is in trustee status-so earliest release is November of 2018. He was then transferred to a county jail where he has been until this past April when he was rushed to the ER and admitted to the hospital for 14 days. He is now in the 720 Unit at CMCF and was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, Atrial Fib, Hyperthyroidism, and a Pulmonary Embolism- he is only 31. The guilt he has being involved in a wreck that invoved fatalities has taken a tole on him. Every night when he calls me-I cry.. An inmate that is in 720 and has been for years suggested to him that I join "Prison Talk" so here I am.. Im hoping this helps me become stronger for him.

Welcome to Prison Talk. I hope your BF is receiving decent medical care so his health will continue to improve. Is he on blood thinners for his AFib and his pulmonary embolism? If not, he should continue to request appointments with a prison doctor to avoid any more issues in the future. Good luck.

That's is my concern.. Yes he is on cumadin, three heart meds, potassium, lasics, and thyroid. His blood is rarely ever checked. Another inmate told him the other day he back was bleeding- he had no idea..and His leg is black - assuming all this from his blood being to thin " and he either does not get right meds or to many. Just makes me very nervous.. If you saw him he looks healthy .. Well I say that.. I have not seen him since 2nd week of April since all these issues began. He has lost 226lbs-186lbs... Unless the riot/stabbing stops visitation this weekend I will get to see him. CMCF has inmates on lock down.. He is not sure if that affects visits?

The medical protocol for coumadin (warfarin) requires frequent blood tests to insure that his clotting factors are neither too high, or too low, neither of which is a good thing. Once the INR level is stabilized, the tests can be scaled back to evrey 6 weeks or so, but uncontrolled bleeding can be an indication of too high a level.

He should ask for the results of his previous blood tests. An INR level of between 2.0 and 3.0 is what many doctors consider appropriate, but any unusual bleeding is always questioned, and may require additional investigation.

The last results he got was months ago .. They do a PT test on him instead of the INT.. Not sure if that's bc of the pulmonary embolism or not.his PT level was 34. . I have assumed his blood is to thin for a while but when HE asks them to please check blood (I make him ask ) they tell him to fill out another sick call.. However- they did take his blood either end of last week I found out and apparently it's to thin bc when he went thru pill line today they told him he was off cumadin till further notice . He was also not give his attentole(?) for heart for week and a half but they finally gave it to him today .. NOW I pray they do not forget he's off cumadin and neglect checking to see of its to thick!

The coumadin can help with two of his problems. It reduces the chances of a clot forming in his heart from the AFib and migrating to his brain, causing a stroke. It also can help dissolve the clot that is already in his lung, and minimize the chance that he will develop more.

I'm sorry I don't have any ideas of how to get the medical staff to do its job, but if they tell him to put in some more sick call slips, that's what he needs to do. Good luck
