Default Knee surgery

I'M FREAKING OUT PEOPLE!! I have to have arthroscopic surgery on my knee on the 30th. I've never been completely put under before. How'd it feel when you guys woke up?? I hate feeling out of control. I have a hard time taking nyquil since it MAKES me sleepy and dizzy. I don't like feeling induced to sleep unless I decide to sleep, make sense?? LOL, help!!

I've been put to sleep a few times, once when I had arthroscopic knee surgery before a knee reconstruction surgery. When you first wake up, you pretty much fall right back asleep. You'll be in and out like that for several hours and you won't really remember having woken up before. You'll be so out of it you won't even remember you were scared or had control issues in the first place. I don't know what to say to ease your mind, just that it's really not bad at all.

Your recovery time shouldn't be too bad either as the procedure is minimally invasive. I had 4 entry points around my knee all less than 1" with each one requiring 2-3 stitches. That was many years ago now though and they probably can do it with even less cutting today.

UGH! I am sorry you are going through this...I myself would freak out as well. I have never had any kind of surgery, hell, I have never spent the night in a hospital.

I have heard people say it is no big deal to be put under....I have heard others say that when they wake up they are really drowsy and sometimes sick.....sometimes they say shit that they do not remember saying....These are just some of the things I have heard friends and family say after having surgery.

Again, I would be freaking out too, as I hate not knowing what is going on and wondering how I will be when I wake up. I would probably back out of it, and not have it done...my fear would be too instense.

I hope it all goes well and that you have a pleasant experience.

Peace~

Lorraine, thanks for your response!! If this procedure doesn't work, because of the way I injured myself, then I might have to do a bigger procedure where I get some bone tissue from a cadaver...so this BETTER work!! Not to mention, I'd broken my foot, right now I have a boot on it, but if it doesn't heal up correctly, then I might need surgery on that as well. Speaking of which....I haven't even been using crutches...oops. Oh and thanks for moving the thread as well =)

InmateLover...THAT WASN'T COMFORTING AT ALL!! lol. jkjkjk. It's my first ever real surgery lol. When I got my wisdom teeth out, I was put on laughing gas which was such a dizzying experience, I was sooooo glad I really didn't eat before otherwise I would've vomited all over myself lol. Ugh. That gas did not make me laugh one bit. I would back out, but my knee is terrible now, I couldn't imagine how it would be when I got older!! I figure, might as well just get it fixed.

Bigbirdsgirl83, you woke up angry?? lol. I've seen those youtube videos of how people were after anesthesia and they said some crazy things. I kinda wonder if that will be me haha.

I am sorry I was not comforting hun, I was just sharing with you what I have heard and that I would be stressing just like you....you are stronger than I am.

I will not even let the dentist put me under with gas......I had 8 shots to numb my mouth and still could feel the work being done, but I was too stubborn to do it easy and take the gas...UGH

I will be thinking of you and hoping that the one time is all it will take.

Peace~

Being put under is fairly simply. They will insert the iv and may tell you to count backwards from 100, you'll never make it. The next thing you know you'll be waking up. Yes you'll be groggy but you won't be panicked or uneasy just very sleepy. Try not to stress yourself out. It's not a huge deal and it's only a very small percentage of people who feel nauseous after the anesthesia. Good luck.

If they're doing what they call 'twilight sleep' on you, you'll take a couple of pills, and just nod off. You are able to respond to requests for movement but most of the time you're not really there. Once they're done, the meds start to wear off and part of you may do and say things without the other part being able to remember later. . . I did that. My friend brought me home and I went about my regular routine - feeding the animals and getting ready for turning them out. I have zero recall, but she waited it out until I just felt tired again and went to bed. That was it.

I've had the twilight sleep before when I got my wisdom teeth taken out. I remember them looking at me and I was trying to keep my eyes open to stop the dizziness and floaty feeling lol. It was the nitrous oxide...don't know if that's what you were referring to, since I didn't take any pills before it. I'm getting the general anesthesia, though not exactly what sure which medications will be in it. OH GOSH, IT'S TOMORROW!! I have to be at the hospital at 5:30am...so nervous =( I can't wait till Tuesday so then this will be over...bleh.

Thanks, I will. Honestly, I'm probably making more of it than what it is, since the surgery I'm getting isn't even a HUGE deal. It could be a heck of a lot worse, and I've been doing a lot of googling so that helped calm me down some. I remember when I got my wisdom teeth done and I read all this stuff which freaked me out, but I was alright the next day. As weird as it sounds, I can handle pain better than I think I can. I just get anxiety really badly and freak myself out, but when it comes right down to it, it's never a big deal. But yes I'll be sure to update afterwards!

Thanks to all who responded!! I had my surgery early this morning, and I feel great! That may be due to the vicodin though lol. I asked the nurse about getting something with anti-nausea, and anti-vomiting..so she put a little patch behind my ear which I'm kind of glad because after when I tried out crutches and had to actually stand up, I felt a bit woozy since they had me take vicodin with some crackers and juice. I've been in and out of it all day just taking some really good naps which is awesome since I didn't get too much sleep the last few days. It was a breeze and nothing to be scared of! The only thing that'll suck is they originally thought it wouldn't be too bad with no need of crutches or anything, but I'll now be on crutches for 6 weeks and have to do physical therapy twice a week for about a month. Oh well though, this will be better than the pain I was dealing with BEFORE I got the surgery! The anxiety beforehand is worse than how you feel afterward lmao.

Glad to hear everything went well....it is good that you are getting lots of rest. Now, you can focus on physical therapy and getting back to where you were before your knee problems.

Peace~
