1. Can you please explain your user name? When I was a little kid, my favorite racehorse was the filly "Ruffian" who broke her leg during a match race with a colt in 1975. She had so much heart she kept running even though her leg was broken. She later had to be put down

2. Can you please explain your avatar? It is a photograph of the racehorse named "Ruffian"

3. What is your relation to your incarcerated loved one? Friend, advocate , teacher

4. How many years has your loved one been in prison? From 1 year all the way up to ten years (several different people)

5. How many years does your loved one have to go? Various (several different people)

6. Is your loved one innocent or guilty of the charge(s) that he was convicted of? All but one of them guilty and all but one of them taking responsibility for their crimes. The one, a doctor, was convicted of illegally prescribing controlled medications to people but he prescribed meds (over the internet) to people he believed were legitimately in need of pain medications. I think what knocked him down in court was that he diagnosed the patients over the phone rather than in person.

7. What are the charge(s)? Various (mostly drug-related, one for a sex offense, one for aggravated assault)

8. In what state is your loved one serving time? All in Texas

9. How often do you visit your loved one? Some I try to visit weekly; some I visit monthly; others I don't visit but correspond with or talk on the phone with.

10. Do you have a favorite strategy that assists you in coping with having your loved one in prison? Please share! I make it a point to be the "rock" for them. The ones I work with don't have familes, or don't have families interested in their welfare. I don't think I could be as strong, though, if they were my own blood or my spouse. I don't know how you ladies and gentlemen do it--I so admire the perserverance and faith that so many of you have. You just hang in there and you don't let anyone beat you down...I fight the machine and I don't let it beat me down either, but the big difference is that while I love my students and clients, they aren't my blood or my spouse. I don't know if my back is that strong. You all have my greatest respect for simply keeping on and standing by your loved ones in the face of society's disdain. I've seen family members treated like trash by staff on visiting days, as if somehow the family members weren't "as good as them" just because their loved ones were incarcerated. It makes me sad to hear them talked down to and spoken to with disrespect. Not all staff do this, of course, but the ones who do are unkind and wrongly judgemental.
I'm always in awe of the families who forge on, despite the obstacles.

Ruffian

Lightbulb Getting to know Texxie

1. Can you please explain your user name? I live in Texas and I just thought it sounded cute and friendly.
2. Can you please explain your avatar? (If you don't have one, why not?) I don't have one yet because I haven't gotten around to it! I've got a couple in mind, though, so hopefully it won't be long.
3. What is your relation to your incarcerated loved one? He is my fiancé and best friend.
4. How many years has your loved one been in prison? Four months of a 12-23 sentence. He'll get the minimum if he behaves!
5. How many years does your loved one have to go? He has just a little less than 8 months until the minimum has been served.
6. Is your loved one innocent or guilty of the charge(s) that he was convicted of? He is guilty, alright, the big doofus.
7. What are the charge(s)? Third DUI.
8. In what state is your loved one serving time? Clinton or Centre County in Pennsylvania.
9. How often do you visit your loved one? I don't get to visit him. He is in PA and I am in Texas and it's really expensive to fly. I'll be there when he gets out, but right now we survive on phone calls and letters.
10. Do you have a favorite strategy that assists you in coping with having your loved one in prison? Please share! I write to him every day and I belong to several prison sites. It's comforting to be able to talk about him in a non-judgmental forum. I guess the biggest coping mechanism I have is a good relationship with his mother. We e-mail every day and phone once in awhile and share information. It's nice to talk to someone who loves him every bit as much as I do. I really don't know how I would have made it without her.
