I am a Federal Witness so I am, in a sort of way, affected by the Federal Prison System.

I originally joined PTO with friends in NY and Michigan state prison systems. As of last year I have two family members in the Federal prisons.

Default I miss him!

My husband just went in today. I miss him so much. It is the first day for me and I just cannot handle it. All I am doing is crying-- I need him. He usually puts the smile on my face. He was sentenced to 41 months. I cannot wait until he comes out.

It may feel like you "cannot wait" but really you will find out that you have more strength and patience than you think. It is very natural to grieve right now - you have suffered a loss. But with each day, you will get up and do what you need to do to take care of your family and communicate with your husband. And don't just focus on him - focus on doing things that give you some joy and keep you healthy and experiences that you can share with him. I know it seems tough right now but it does get easier and we've all been through it and can help you out. So here - have a hanky and have a good cry and then sit down a write a sweet letter to your sweetie. He'll appreciate it - a lot! Zelda

Zelda is so right (as usual)...
When my daughter and b/f went in I was a zombie for weeks (months?) until I realized that it wasn't helping anyone. I got busy and went into a routine that helped me pass the time and got my mind going in a different direction.
Part of that routine was to write to both of them three times a week...sometimes just "not for nothing" letters just to let them know I was thinking of them.
It helped me and I know they enjoyed the connection...the letter from GOTCOTT made me realize how much.
Keep the faith and keep going...
Lyn

Thank you so much for your advice it really helps. I have written him a letter every day since he has been in. A feel a sense of closeness by doing so. I know it may sound werid, but it feels like he's right there listening. While writting, if I write something funny or sad I laugh or cry just as if he was there. Ha ha! Again, thanks!

Dont let that drive to help him die. Fight for him...I dont know what he did, but if he is a no violent oofender...enourage family and friends to wite the representitives/senators....ecouraging release for non violent offender. Fight to help get the parole reinstated..some things to monitor.. Federal Inmate Work Incentive Relief Act of 2008" (FIWIRA) a good tiThe Criminal Justice Tax Relief Act of 2008 (CJTRA). The CJTRA would establish a hybrid system if parole for all federal offenders. CJTRA is estimated to save the taxpayers 4 to 7 billion dollars annually and 80 to 140 billion dollars over a twenty-year period. The Federal Release Revision Act of 2008. Without going into detail (the devil is always in the details), suffice it to say that increased good time and parole review by the United States Parole Commission for those given over a certain length of sentence are the two focuses of this bill. FedCURE is very happy at the outcome. The proposed bill will still affect each and every inmate in some positive way. Its hard to get friends and families to write to representatives. I have a letter....by the way, my brother in law is in Butner low

Dear Senator/Congressman. Assemblyman,

I am writing to you out of deep concern that we are wasting huge amount of tax
dollars incarcerating inmates (both state and federal) who are of little risk to the public safety (non-violent criminal history). These are offenders with much lower chance of re-incarceration than is generally experienced in the general prison population. While much effort is being expended upon rectifying the conditions that relate to high recidivism; and those efforts are most worthwhile, much immediate tax burden relief could be had by taking prompt action in identifying & releasing those inmates that are low risk for recidivism and risk to public safety. The resources freed/saved could then be used in a variety of ways to better serve the common good.

As you probably know, the statistics are frightening.

a. The Justice Policy Institute reported that, as of February, 2002, over 2 million people were incarcerated in State, Federal, & County Institutions.
b. In 2002,over 7,000,000 people were incarcerated in federal, State, or local prisons or jails, or were under parole or court supervision “Second chance Act 2007”
c. According to the Bureau of Statistics expenditures on Corrections alone, increased from $9 Billion to 59.6 Billion in 2002 (not including costs of arrests, prosecution, or costs to victims,) “Second Chance Act 2007”

This huge drain on tax based public resources simply has to be stopped. According to the National Criminal Justice Commission, many criminologists have begun to ponder the unthinkable…..that the criminal justice system itself, rather than guarding the peace, contributes to social instability in America. “The Real War on Crime”. The report of the National Criminal Justice Commission, Harper Perennial 1996

The US Senate and Congress has taken the final step by addressing the issues related to recidivism & public safety in the landmark, “second Chance Act 2007” that revised the Omnibus Crime Control Safe Streets Act of 1968. In the long run, such programs will do much to lower the costs associated with re-incarceration of repeat offenders,

As my state and federal representatives, I would appreciate your prompt action in these regards.

Sincerely

send with the following:

Honorable Senator __________

In re: Support of legislation relating to Federal Prison reform.

a. Reinstitution of the federal parole system
b. Mandatory placement of non-violent first offenders into community corrections options , focusing on public service, probation and home confinement options.; and
c. Parole eligibility for all federal and state inmates who have served at least 25 % of their sentence, and who possess the characteristics associated with lower recidivism rates, to wit, little risk to public safety.

1. Educational skills, high school diploma/GED or above
2. First offenders with no history of violence or sex related offenses.
3. Non drug abuser or completion of comprehensive treatment program
4. History of gainful employment, pre-incarceration or successful completion of a trade or craft preparation program while incarcerated.
5. Documented evidence of a stable family constellation willing to provide post release support and assistance
6. Successful preparation of a feasible release plan, involving pre-established contacts with community service resources
7. Pre- established job opportunities for released inmates that are of pre-retirement age &are capable of employment.

I ask that you support any, and all proposed legislation, such as the “Criminal Justice Tax Relief Act of 2008”, that reduce prison populations without jeopardizing public safety and thereby reduce the huge burden of tax-based resources utilized in the incarceration of inmates that are of little or no major risk to public safety or recidivism.
