Smile What Are The Kids Thinking

A Very Good Friend Of Mine Is In Prison Doing 2 Years, And I'm Taking Care Of Her Two Kids Untill She Comes Home, The Kids Are Ages 1 And 3 So I Decided To Make Things Sound Easy And Better Then The Truth By Telling Them That "mommy Is Away At Work".
Last Week I Toke The Kids To Visit Mom For The Very First Time,
As We Drove Into The Parking Lot Rikki The 3 Year Old Looked At The Prison And She Asked Me "is This The Place Where My Mommy Is Working" I Told Her "yes" - She Then Replyed "my Mommy Works At A House Where The Bad People Live" I Was Totaly Shocked !
How In The World Did This Little Child Know That ?

Isn't it amazing what children know. I am going to move this post to the children with parents in prison forum. There are many others who are going through this same situation and I'm sure they will have advice/suggestions for you. Welcome to PTO, Glad you found us!

It always amazes me how smart these little kids are. I decided from the beginning to tell them the truth because they do know way more than we expect. I have a three year old and a two year old. They know that daddy did something wrong and had to go away for a while. I explained that it is like a really long time out, but daddy will be home again someday. We visit him once a month and they are happy to see him and fine when we leave him. They know that he loves them and that I love them and I think that is the most important part.

Kids are very smart with all that is on TV and with the news kids know and listen to everything people say and do! When my mom was in prison, we used to tell my little brothers and sister that she was at the hospital getting better because she was sick, we never took them to see her, it was too much, but she always called and wrote!
