TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) -- Nine inmates have been indicted for their roles in last summer's riot at the Talladega County jail.

District Attorney Steve Giddens said Corey Hughes, Tracy Brown, Marvin Woods and Darryl Riggins were all charged in the county indictment with felony escape for forcing their way into the jail's control tower and opening other cell doors.

Shawn Barclay, Delvin Boston, Donnie Murphy Sr., Donnie Murphy Jr., and Donnie Wilson were all charged with unlawful acts by three or more inmates resulting in the destruction of state property, Giddens said Friday.

Authorities believe overcrowded conditions contributed to the violence, which apparently began as two inmates fought on Aug. 13. Four corrections officers and one inmate were injured.

Forty-two inmates broke chains on their cell doors, seized the left pod, barricading themselves in with tables and chairs. Local, state and federal police used tear gas to restore calm.
