I'll be going up before the easter holiday to visit my friend who has been there for about a year... We talk every week.... She is surviving despite the lack of food, and some food poisoning... she has now chosen the vegan food menu they offer..

Default Gadsden CI

Your friend is wise to opt for the vegan menu. My niece has done the same and says it is a big improvement, although they rely heavily on beans and peanut butter. It used to be that there was one drawback--if you went for the vegan option, you had to show up for every meal, even if you didn't feel like eating or preferred to make something of your own. I don't know though if that rule is still being enforced. Have a good visit. Get there early; at least 45 minutes before visiting officially starts. It is crowded (big population, small visiting area) and around Easter it should be packed.

Default If I can help I will

It been a few years, but I was an inmate at Gadsden in FL, I know what you all go through, it's a bad situation for everyone involved. I had never been in trouble ever and as a first time offender ending up in prison, I got a judge that wanted to teach me a lesson to never screw up again and that is exactly what he did. I knew nothing going in, but as I came out I had a very different mind set and much more knowledge. If there is anyway I can help with advice or information, I will do what I can. My sympathies to everyone who are locked up and the pain it puts all of their families through.

I have a niece in Gadsden, but she is (hopefully) leaving soon on pre-work release. It is a good thing, too. Things are chaotic there since MCA took over.

Sorry for my delay in answering this, I am not on this site that often. The biggest concern about visiting at Gadsden is to get there early, it is usually crowded. The only money allowed in is $25 in change; bring it in a clear plastic bag. Technically there is no contact during visits, but usually you can get away with some discreet hand holding. A hug and a kiss at the end of each visit are all that is permitted.

Hi jpups4,

My niece is still at Gadsden. She is nearing the end of a long sentence. I just wanted to say hi and, if you are new to Gadsden, to let you know that I am happy to answer any questions that you might have.
